Default Unsure of which driver to use.

Hi,

I'm running Red Hat 9 with the kernel updated to:

[kevin@localhost kevin]$ uname -a
Linux localhost.localdomain 2.4.20-20.9 #1 Mon Aug 18 11:27:43 EDT 2003 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux

The machine has a GeForce 4 MX440-8X card in it. The motherboard is an Asus A7V8X-X. The kernel was updated via RPM.

I am not sure which of the drivers to install. I have installed

NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0261.rh90up_2.4.20_9.athlon.rpm

and upon reboot, rss-glx (the binary rpm from http://www.gurulabs.com/downloads.html, home page at http://rss-glx.sourceforge.net/) still runs very slowly (about one frame every two seconds).

Am I supposed to be using one of the other drivers, or have I done something wrong or have I forgotten to do something?

Thanks,
Kevin

im a noob to this also but im assuming that along with the nforce drivers you have installed the vid card drivers and configured it all properly. if you have it should work fine. the vid card drivers for red hat 9 is the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run file from nvidia's site.

The RPM you installed is for nForce motherboads, but does not supply the video acceleration driver, only network and peripherals etc.

Go here, where you'll find the pkg2.run installer mentioned above.

nVidia Linux Display Driver

Make sure to read the Readme linked there, and ask questions (and search the forum.. its got hundreds of posts about how to do this) to clarify anything you don't understand after reading it.

Default Okay, got it.

Note that all of the drivers on:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux.html

are listed as "Graphics Drivers" so that confused me a bit.

Thanks,
Kevin

Yes that is definitely misleading. Perhaps you should fire off an email to request they fix that.
