Default Nvidia driver not working anymore

Hey folks,

I'm having a problem with the nVidia drivers. They were working great for the longest time - but a recent reboot seemed to have implimented some change that rendered them nonworking. I have not changed the kernel or the driver.

The nv driver that comes with XFree86 still works fine, but when using the nvidia driver, the screen flickers several times as the nvidia driver tries to do whatever it is it does, and then the xserver either freezes, or dies.

I've posted an 'strace -f' here:
http://www.phildev.net/phil/strace-f.startx.nvidia.root

I am running a 2.6 kernel (2.6.0-test9) and I'm using the nvidia patches from minion.de - but I've been using this kernel for a while now, and had several reboots with it and never had any problems - therefore, I do not think its a 2.6-related issue. Plus, as I said, the nv driver is working. I tried recompiling and reinstalling the nvidia driver again, but that didn't help.

The only thing I thought might have changed is the xserver - I knew I'd upgraded frome 4.2.1-21.1 to 4.2.1-13 (the extra version is from debian) SOMETIME recently... so I downgraded back to 4.2.1-12.1, and that did not help. So that leaves me at a complete loss.

The nv driver is working for now, but it sucks, and I'm anxious to get the nvidia driver working again.

I'm running Debian unstable, custom 2.6.0-test9 kernel, and my card is a GeForce3 Ti 200. If I can provide any more infomation, please let me know.

Thanks,
Phil

Default Oh yeah.. it segfaults

Not that you won't see it in the strace, but I thought I'd point out that the xserver is segfaulting when I use the nvidia driver.

7:45 am GMT Nov 11 I get no response out of your web server. You can attach a file to the forum here as well, which might work better to avoid weird problems like that (no response but the machine is alive..)

Have you tried reinstalling the driver to make sure it can still build against that kernel? Its worth a check to make sure nothing has changed you didn't notice.. really.

Also, because you're using the unstable tree (which I realize isn't THAT unstable.. but still) its entirely likely that downgrading may not be very clean. Were you careful to verify the system really did remove everything related to the newer version?

Note this bug and followup (which says "its known and fixed, you need to use TLS libs")
http://lists.debian.org/debian-x/200.../msg00118.html

You can force the tls libs be used with command line parameters to nvidia's installer, but it should detect the need for them by itself (try the -A option to see more details).

OK, I will look into forcing TLS at compile time.

Yes, I did recompile the driver a few times... think it may be this TLS thing since glibc has been updated lately.

I've attached the strace for reference.

That worked!! I didn't use options, because I I use 'make install' after applying the minion.de 2.6 patches.. but I copied over the .../tls/*.so drivers into /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/ and voila!!

Thanks! I will be documenting this on my linux page in the morning...
