Default Problem in installing nvidia driver for debian 3.0

Hi,

I am a Debian user and a newbie in using linux. A few days ago, I have tried to install the nvidia driver for my Geforce 2 MX 400, but failed.

I do not know why it is failed, but the log file keep saying that the nvidia kernel cannot initialize, but the nvidia modules can be loaded.

Here is my XF86Config-4 file and log file

I install the driver by "sh (name of driver).run --kernel-header-path=/usr/src/2.4.20-3-k7/include", the driver "said" that the nvidia driver is installed successfully, so that I do not know what the problem is.

Can anyone give some suggestion to me?

Check in /lib/modules how many directories there are. If you ind a directory called "2.4.20" and another one called "2.4.20-..." then i guess your module got fooled and installed itslef in the wrong directory. If not, then look for the NVidia.o module in the 2.4.20-... dir.

try to manually load the driver with "modprobe nvidia" (as root) and check the error (dependancy problem, or it cannot be found at all).

There is maybe some kind of option like "kernel version" for the instaler to know what's the good version of the kernel

Hi,

yes, in my /lib/modules, there is more than 1 kernel, but after I have removed it and reinstalled the nvidia driver, the kernel cannot still work properly.

If I run "modprobe nvidia", and then "startx", the monitor can only display the nvida logo for a few seconds and then crash down ...

Anyway, thank you for giving me some tips to solve my problem.

James Ng

/usr/X11R6/bin/X -version

If you see this at the top of the output:
XFree86 Version 4.2.1-13

see this thread
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...threadid=20784

If 'modprobe nvidia' doesn't return any error, then the module is both found and inserted into the kernel without conflict. That doesn't mean however that once it is used something won't go badly, which is where you end up with the crash.

Check the output of dmesg for agp bus or nvidia module related lines. Your log doesn't contain anything especially peculiar.

My suggestion for a 'fix' is to try the NvAGP "1" option to try and force nv agp handling rather than agpgart.

Forgotten to mention

The case in the link
http://lists.debian.org/debian-x/200.../msg00118.html

is very similar with my problem.

However, I cannot do the "make install" if I extract the nvidia driver, since the driver said it is missing a header file.

I have copied all the file in all the tls directories into /usr/X11R6/lib/modules, but the problem still exist
