Default Big pause exploring network folder for first time

I have two computers running Windows XP here. On one of them, with a Sis based MB and a Realtek ethernet card, pauses for about 30sec when I browse a folder across the network for the first time. The explorer window just sits there not responding, with an hour glass. In the mean time, I can open another explorer window, browse to the same folder and access it immediately. Any idea what the problem is and how to fix it? Using latest drivers on both machines. (I think I recall the problem not happening before SP1 or certain security patches, but not sure.) Also, during the pause, one svchost is taking 100% cpu time.

I've had this problem with my wireless card. To fix it, I had to manually set the IP, subnet, gateway, and transmission speed. Once I did that, voila, no problems.
