Default Another 8500 owner turns to the darkside

Just replaced my 8500 with a MSI GF4 Ti4400, and what a difference!! The IQ is about the same but the speed is unbelievable.
Glad I made the switch

me and Marqmajere did the same thing as you, R8500 to GF4TI, and yes it's a huge difference. I had nothing but issues with R8500. Without even bothering with a fresh install of windows, I went straight to GF4 TI4400 and everything magically worked without complication. I even used the drivers that came with my card and they were fine!

Welcome to forums, don't be a stranger, and congrats on your new card

I had predownloaded the 30.82 drivers so I didn't even bother with the cd that came with it. I will say, though that I do love this card. Runs MUCH better than my 8500. This Ti4600 is about as close to headache-free as you can get. Enjoy your new card.

Well the thing with me, Marqmajere, and Majblunder is we got burned by the R8500, so our trust for ATI with gaming has been tainted. That being said, will not likely ever get R9700. Additionally the cost of GF4 is about HALF what a 9700 runs right now. And finally, since all of us are much happier with performance and stability of GF4 over our former cards, I don't think we have anything to feel bad about

Gator is absolutly correct. I bought nothing but 3DFX products up untill my 8500 which was purchased just this last Feb. The reason I bought Voodoo was because of stability and system compatability. When 3Dfx went under, I took a chance and went with the Radeon 8500. I read that they performed well and they do. It was just the fact that I had to jump through hurdles in order to get all my games to work. "Disable this and tweak that" got real old, real fast. (For example, you had to disable the W-buffer just to play Medal of Honor ) I've had no problems with this G4 like I did when I used my 8500.
Granted, the 8500 is a fast card.....IF you can get it to work. I could get mine to work, but I didn't feel that the pains I had to sometimes go through justified the cards performance. I'm glad I switched to the G4. I wish I would have a long time ago. I won't be buying a 9700. From what I've read they have just as many problems. I blame it on unpolished drivers. (The card IS new after all) But regardless. I do feel burned by my ATI card and that is enough to not go back.

I dont agree with that at all.
If what you read comes from Rage 3d, please be reminded that Rage is THE ATI fan/support site...and as such everyone with an issue will go there to report/vent/bitch about it..and this will make it look as if there are more problems than there really is.

When Nvidia users have issues they have tons of sites to go to and Bitch/moan/vent...so any one Nvidia site will have alot less people with issues being reported in comparison.

I see tons of people at rage posting happy posts of their 9700. Sure there are people with issues as well...but are we really sure ALL the issues are due to ATI/the 9700/ or its drivers?

I have read tons of reviews on the 9700 all over the net and the consensus is that this card performs well with little to no headaches. As much as I loved my 8500, ALL the same sites praising the 9700 were very quick to bash on the 8500. So if the problems really were like the 8500..surely theyd all have no problems reporting it.

Its too bad that you feel you were burned with the 8500, because unfortunately you are missing out on the superb 9700.

But i am familiar with staying away from a brand you feel burned on..hence I wont buy a Dodge vehicle anymore hehehe.

I agree with you the Dodge!!! I had a caravan for awhile that the engine simply died in less than 10yrs! That's pathetic.

And in all fairness to ATI, I will say that their original Radeon 64ddr VIVO was a DAMN fine card and I still have it. It perform well, was reliable, great picture quality, and I got it for a fair price even though I bought it at release. GG ATI

LOL, I understand. I'm the same way with Fords. I had a Dodge Aries that was a great little car - had it for 13 years and even in sub-zero weather it would start every time I turned the key. Now the Ford Escort we had, well...don't even get me started on what a POS that was.

I digress. Once ATI got its Windows 2000 driver situation straightened out with the Radeon 64, it turned out to be a really solid card. As a matter of fact, I know several people who still have them in their main rigs.

Hehee i know its way off topic,
I bought a brand new Shelby Daytona in 1990 (it was actually a leftover 1989). Sweet car...for about a month.

After the first month, I started needing a new fog light like every month. Sure they would replace it for free...but after the 6th or 7th one, i started getting the feeling i was becoming less and less welcome at the dealership.
Then after about 3 months the brakes totally crapped out. Granted..brakes go, and should be considered routine maintenance...but 3 months later?
Of course the car had power everything....for the same 3 months when the power windows refused to roll back up...both of em...and it rained

The clutch also started wearing out about a year into the cars life cycle..( im sure that I had alot to do with this, as at the time I was pretty green when it came to anything other than an automatic hehe...but still...another trip to the garage)

All in all the car wasnt too bad after those things were taken care of, and really the only problem that stayed constant was the continuous replacing of fog lamps, which never seemed to be fixed.
I only kept the car for about 2 years , so I cant know how the Turbo was after i traded it back in .
Kind of turned me off on Dodge...which is too bad because I really like the look of those Durangos, and the wife loves the caravan...but she had to settle for the Windstar because i just couldnt shake the Dodge impression.

Of course if i ever have the extra coins Ill throw all that preconception out the window and buy the Viper!!

I own 2 ATi Radeons, the 8500, and the 64ddr VIVO, both were good cards, they did what i asked them to do, sometimes they were stubborn, but they did well just the same.
Sure I could've bought the 9700, heck it was starring me right in the face at the computer store, but I couldnt justify the pricetag. granted it fast, does some things i wish my wife could do, but she does things it cant do either.
I dont get caught up in the hype, hoopla and all that jazz, I could care less, I just wanted something that was better then what I had, and didnt cost me an arm and a leg. The GF4 Ti series fits that bill and Im happy with my decision.

Just a little side note,
When I played BF1942 on the 8500 it was a slide show, even at medium settings, with this GF4 Ti4400 its all maxed out, 1280x960x32 2XAA and its smooth as my grandsons butt.

ROTFL. That highly amusing and so, so true. Well, at least it would be for me if I were married or even had a gf. But that's a topic for another day.
