Post Resolved:Compiler version:nvidia-installer does not detect correct gcc version

First, I've googled around and searched this forum for answers, but I haven't found anything useful. I do apologize for my ignorance if this has been answered before.

I've just installed SuSE 8.2 which does not include drivers for Nvidia graphics card (I was informed of this during the installation). My card is a Aeolus GeForce FX 5600.

I download the "NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run" file from nvidia.com and had some minor problems with figuring out how to kill the X server and then had to install the kernel-source package since the installer couldn't find a interface on download.nvidia.com.

The log from nvidia-installer (at /var/log/nvidia-installer.log) is attached.
Basically it says I'm using another compiler version than the one used for compiling my running kernel, but 'cat /proc/version' and 'gcc --version' shows that it indeed is the same (Anything else would be strange since I haven't modified much since the installation).
cat /proc/version produces this:
"Linux version 2.4.20-4GB (root@Pentium.suse.de) (gcc version 3.3 20030226 (prerelease) (SuSE Linux)) #1 Wed Aug 6 18:26:21 UTC 2003"
and gcc --version produces:
"gcc (GCC) 3.3 20030226 (prerelease) (SuSE Linux)" (copyright message removed for clarity)

I'm quite new to Linux and I would appreciate any help on this matter, since I'm getting tired of running on 1024*768

I believe that Suse 8.2 does actually include the driver that will work for 2d graphical mode but it incorrectly identifies the FX cards (as does RedHat and Mandrake currently) so they don't use the "nv" driver.

You should be able to edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config and change:
Driver "vesa"
Driver "nv"

(that is if I correctly guess it is attempting to use vesa already)

On to the nvidia driver...
If you know what you are doing and want to override this
check, you can do so by setting IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH.

In any other case, set the CC environment variable to the
name of the compiler that was used to compile the kernel.
These are your two options, the first is less likely to work correctly, but might and is worth the try first. Since you do appear to have the right compiler already, this might do the trick.

Before installing nvidia driver, type:
"..the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." (Edmond Burke)
nVIDIA video driver RPMs for Fedora :: see yum repo at livna.org.

Many thanks for the help, I had no clue I had to use 'export' to let the installer see the variable.

Works smooth now, 1600x1200 is the way to go
