Question WinXP setup loop

Just got a new computer and tried to install XP to no avail. The computer boots up really slow, taking a long time to get to the POST screen, once it finally gets into the intial WinXP setup everything runs. When its done and the computer restarts to go onto the second part of the install ( where you put in the CD key, network settings, etc. ) it never does, just boots into the intial setup to the same thing. Not sure what the deal here is.

Its a brand new biostar barebones system, and it will ( hopefully ) be the second one I build this month. I've got a XP2500, Viking 512 PC2700, WD 80gb HD, and a cheapy 56k PCI modem. Their are no beeps or POST error messages, and I would say it takes about 20 seconds more than it should.

Odd thing is that this happened a few computers ago, I built a computer with similar spec's, though it had the nice Asus nForce 2 board, and it had a similar probelm regarding the laggy boot. After windows was installed it went away and runs like a champ now.

Though this windows issue is stumping me..

I meant, are you walking away from it and allowing it to boot from a CD repeatedly

It's the drive.

I've had that happen a couple times. Twice with WD's and once on an IBM deathstar. Same exact symptoms. And the history points that direction too. Really sucks man...wish it could be something cheap

Have you checked to see if the drive has bad sectors or anything like that?

The drive could be fine. If it has bad sectors all you have to do is repair them. Easiest way I've found is to use a tool that WD provides for free on their site. It's called WinDLG. It'll test the drive. If errors come up, try zeroing out the drive (will erase any data on the drive). Worked great for me.

Turns out it was the drive, tried 2 others, another WD 80gb, and an old maxtor 10gb, worked like a charm, I've yet to check the drive for bad sectors, but I'll try the program Nephilim, if not it was orderd through Newegg, so it shouldn't be to much trouble. These little computers are quick once they get running to.

Thanks for all the help!
