I thought Quake 2 was actually very well connected. The story was REALLY simple but just as deep most action flicks. I actually felt a great sense of accomplishment when I finally escaped from Stroggos at the end.

Man that game was impressive at the time.

story of survival my friend... kill the big/bad mofo's before they kill you...

and once you finish killing them... bash their faces in with the butts of your gun...

While I think DooM 3 will have something of a story, it's not going to be a running kill-fest like Serious Sam. Enemies are going to be placed strategically and in just the right quantity. I think JC and crew are going for atmosphere and a game that will scare the crap out of you. For that, I can't wait.

mods in the doom3 can be as fast as the original Doom1 or SeriouSam with dozens of monters at the same time.. it just that current generation hardware will not be able to handle that.. So idsoftware its targeting the majority wich will have Geforce4/RAdeon9600/Fx5700 but by the end of 2004 and 2005 expect more and more speed and killer fests mods ,with the speed of those old games ..bigger Outdoors levels will gradually increase with faster hardware too,the slow pace its a design decision not a limitation ..multiplayer limited to 4 players ,only in the retail game ,but mods will be able to increase that number the way they like, quake4 will be done too in that engine ,just figure that . the biggest fragfest i have ever seen in a game was in quake2 with 64 players at the same time.. (there were some servers of tribes2 too with 120players ) but in quake2 was more noticeable when a server was crowded because of its smaller enviroments. in doom3 you will be able to overcrowd any level with the included editor with as many monsters you want ,but dont expect too be playable at all with current hardware. it just a matter of time ,for the speed of the hardware to be there.

Q2 had a semblance of a story. Before the game came out iD was crowing about how Q2 wouldn't be like Q1 and the AI and story would be there, the levels would make sense, etc. We all know the AI sucked and the story was weak at best.

With less monsters to frag, Doom3 will need a story. At least earlier games could get away without having a story by continually throwing enemies at you.

I don't really go in arguments over story or gameplay b/c it is a personal opinion, I wasn't one of the people that though Halflife was amazingly new in gameplay featured, b/c to me finding a switch to turn on the "oxygen" and the "fuel" is the same as finding a red skull key. I don't care much, but I will admit that it is better to have a plausible thing to find at least as opposed to a random object.
Half-Life's tasks were interesting because you never knew what would happen. All those scripted events were brilliant. The levels actually made sense and it didn't seem like they were designed and the story was thought up ad hoc.

In any case d3 will have an attempt at a story and we will all decide whether we like it or not.
Once it finally comes out

If the game is pretty enough I can probably forgive a lack of story, assuming that's the case. What I really can't stand are ugly games that have no story; no sense of why I should be playing.

Ah yes, the AI in Quake 2: "THEY CAN DUCK!" Yes, although they stop moving beforehand to duck, do so in the open, and generally just serve as a nice way to kill a few other more annoying enemies.
