Houston we have a problem here:
My PC is a PII 300, TNT2 64, Slackware 9.1 (kernel 2.4.22), Xfree86 4.3.0 and a NFREM NF1500MAE 15" flat screen. I ran the nvidia installer (1.0.4496) It compiled a module kernel for me; I modified the XF86Config to run the driver then I started X And then... my monitor returned me a few blue flashes, and refused to start X What happened? (I attached the log file) |

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module!
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting *** (II) UnloadModule: "nvidia" (II) UnloadModule: "vgahw" The Faq is your friend ;-) Q: My X server fails to start, and my XFree86 log file contains the error: "(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module!" A: Nothing will work if the NVIDIA kernel module doesn't function properly. If you see anything in the X log file like "(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module!" then there is most likely a problem with the NVIDIA kernel module. First, you should verify that if you installed from rpm that the rpm was built specifically for the kernel you are using. You should also check that the module is loaded ('/sbin/lsmod'); if it is not loaded try loading it explicitly with 'insmod' or 'modprobe' (be sure to exit the X server before installing a new kernel module). If you receive errors about unresolved symbols, then the kernel module has most likely been built using header files for a different kernel revision than what you are running. You can explicitly control what kernel header files are used when building the NVIDIA kernel module with the --kernel-include-dir option (see `sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg1.run --advanced-options` for details). and so on... Regards, Paul |

OK, I read the FAQ. And still I don't get the point: 1) I did not install via RPM (I use slackware) 2) I loaded the module manually: same outcome, XFree86 does not start. 3) using header files... What to do, then? I am not very familiar with kernel tampering!!!! where do I have to look? |

Hello.
Unfortunatly, I'm not sure I can be very helpfull beyond what the FAQ says (I also have a freezing pb and a post on this forum :-( ). But: -Using or not rpm is not important -do insmod nvidia (as root) to load the module -To check if the module is loaded, do lsmod. If your module is loaded, the error log should be different. I'm sorry I don't know more... Regards, Paul |
