That's right, the Comair Rotron Caravel AC 550CFM fan! This bad boy is 254x89mm and runs off of your standard 115 volt alternating current. At full power, it screams at nearly 50dBA! Here are some pics to give you an idea of its immensity:

You may be wondering, why am I using a gawd-awfully large and loud fan. Well, for now I can only answer one part of that question. You see, I said it did 50dBa at full power. However, I never intended to run it that way. I hooked up a variable speed fan controller I got at Home Depot intended for use with ceiling fans. It features a [High], [Medium], and [Low] setting. Here's a little pic:

At low setting, the Caravel AC is silent. I could only hear a sound putting my ear less than 6 inches from the motor, and even then it was hardly audible. On medium, the fan offers a good compromise between noise and performance. I would classify it as, not loud, but simply audible. More quiet than that danged Crystal Orb. At high you are getting the full 50dBa, which is rather annoyingly loud.

If you are interested in such an air-moving device, go to Comair Rotron. They are local in my town of San Diego, but you cannot order fans directly from them (as I was dissapointed to find out). DigiKey is where I got mine for $65 shipping inclusive. Comair Rotron also carries many other fans of all sizes in AC and DC varieties.

*Normally I don't post cooling stuff in here any more as there is little interest, but I thought maybe this monster might spark some discussion, so tell me what you think.

Why not jsut get an air conditioner and hook it rith up to your pc? Set it on 0-5 degs celc. Get some really nice cooling going there.

I have a 120mm, 125V fan in the front of my PC. The wire trails out the back of my box direclty into an outlet. It is extremely fast, but actually produces less noise than my friends FOP 38

I have it wired to a switch as the front of my case so I can switch it on and off as I need it.

Kerbs, at full throttle, it spins at only 1650 RPM. But it probably spins at only a couple hundred at the low setting.

Dan, you forgot pelts(TECs). And chiller units such as refrigerators and dehumidifiers are usually used in conjunciton with watercooling. Don't forget bongs! I don't know where I'd fit on your scale, but a month ago I was a sissy.

LN2 isn't all it's cracked up to be... it's very expensive, very short term, and can often toast hardware because of condensation. I don't know of anybody who does it this side of the Pacific.

The only downside to using AC fans instead of DC ones (ignoring the electrocution risk) is that the AC motors are a lot bigger than DC ones. So it only makes sense using AC fans 120mm and bigger.
