This does not seem to be related to the garbled consoles, though, or does it?

That comment was not directly related to console restore problems. It was aimed at someone in the thread who mentioned that he had TV problems.

But, again, *some* console restore problems will be magically resolved by updating your vbios. Some won't, and we track those down and fix them internally. I'm simply trying to give everyone an immediate option for a possible fix, rather than just saying "Wait for the next driver.".

I am using SuSE 9.0, and I had the same problem as Peter (from a post of page 1). Downloading the nvidia driver and putting the option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" to the xf86 configuration file solved the text console problem ^_^

I spent so many hours... Thanks Peter! :-)

I've same problems using TVout on Leadtek GeForce 2 MX, kernel 2.4.22,
compiled-in drivers vesafb, using nvidia's 5xxx driver version. X - no problems. CTRL+F1 (first VT) - green / pink blocks, vt broken, input still accepted. I try to update video bios, if it fails, I downgrade nvidia driver version as all of you have thankfully described!

I had the same problem mentioned above (garbled consoles, but machine alive, after have started X server).

Fedora Core 1.
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 1800+
Motherboard: MSI KT3 Ultra
Video card: MSI Geforce 4 MX 420
Nvidia Driver installed: 5336.

In my particular case, the solution was to add the parameter "vga=791" to my bootloader (grub) when loading the kernel. Before that, I had no such parameter and my consoles used mode 80x25 (I guess).

Now everything works fine, and consoles don't get corrupt after starting X.

Hi,

don't blame nvidia for everything.

I had a noname gf-4 mx 440 and was able to have a nice resolution with vga-mode and without vesafb, vga=ask supplied me with a whole bunch of different nice resolutions. With my new gf fx 5200 from leadtek I have to use vesafb to get something else then 80x.. and 132x modes. Seems that their card-bios has some problems... but it is the latest one so I can not update it (and the update tool is for windows only.. I do not have any windows versions.. cool..).

It is not nvidia's fault, when the manufacturers are not able to programm correct card-bios'. So, please, be nice and don't insult Andy, ok? He just tries to help you.

Default Same trouble

Ever since I upgraded to a GF FX 5200 I've been having the same trouble with huge garbled letters in command line. I'm going to try updating the nvidia bios.

Unhappy Bios update did not work

I tried to update the Bios of my Leadtek WinFast A250 card.

It seems like I have the latest version.

In addition it seems to be quite strange that switching the TV-out with a broken BIOS breaks the console.
This seems to be an issue of the Driver, expecially since older versions did not show the problem.

Again, updating the Bios did not work. Any other ideas? Does someone NOT have this error? Maybe some NVIDIA guy? I would work together with you, send you all details, try BIOS settings anything. I will be your slave
I just want this stupid bug now solved.

Question No BIOS available for my card :(

Hi,

I have also had the 'garbled text on console' problem after starting X (4.3.0). My card is
a geforce4 mx440 made by Palit. I went to their website to get a BIOS update
as suggested by Andy but guess what? They have no BIOSes available for
download! So apart from trying to roll back to an earlier version of the driver (I
was using the latest), I'm not sure what to do....

Energyman, do your really have TV-out activated (e.g. via twinview) and no console problems?
Can you please post some details on your machine (e.g. graphics card, motherboard) so that I know what I should buy next time.
