Default problems getting 2048x1536 video resolutions

I'm having trouble getting the full refresh rate and resolution out of
my hardware.

I can get 1600x1200x24 @ 75Hz and I can get 1792x1344x24 @ 60
headache-inducing Hz, but I can not get any higher. Particularly I
can't get the 1920x1440 @ 75 Hz mode listed in the users manual of my
monitor. The monitor is a Sony Trinitron "CPD-G520P", bought in, I
think, 2002.

(If I bump down to 16 bits per pixel, I can score 1920x1440,
1856x1392, and 1792x1344 but all at painful 60Hz.)

My video card is a TNT2 Pro 32megabytes, which according to the
some random websearches can do 2048x1536x24 @ 60-75 Hz. I'm a little confused on what that means! Does that mean "we're being intentially vauge here?" Or does it mean both frequncies? For my particular pair of eyeballs 60 Hz is unusable, so I'm interested in what I can do to get the 75 Hz.

I'm considering changing video cards to a gf4 anyway. Do you think this
will fix it?

Have you tried writing a modeline for 2048@1536@75hz? Remember that your card supports a max pixel clock of 215.

I'd never heard of pixel clock before you mentioned it. Thank you.

I find two definitions, one in NVLinuxNotes4191.pdf which says

RefreshRate = PixelClock / ( VertFrameLength * HorizFrameLength)

[goes on to note "The VertFrameLength refers to actual frame length and not simply the visible resolution". (p 84).]

Assuming VertFrameLength equals visible verticle resolution, and PixelClock=215, I should be able to get a 2048x1536x24@68Hz. Not bad!

Only thing is, the other definition, courtesy of the XFree86 Modeline Generator at http://xtiming.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/xtiming.pl disagrees and demands 2048x1536x24@45Hz. I'm not sure why they're different, does anyone know why?

Anyhow, I went with the Xfree Modeline generator because it was more conservative, and because it generated cut'n'pastable configuration for XF86Config:

However, X doesn't deign to use these, putting this message in the verbose log:

(WW) NVIDIA(0): Not using mode "1664x1248@64":
(WW) NVIDIA(0): horizontal sync width (2512 - 1696 = 816) greater than 256

Grr... in other words there are some constraints that this video mode calculator doesn't take into account. I have to invest more time to grok what they are.

You should use 'gtf' to generate modelines.

Hey, thanks!
I was able to eke out 1664x1248x24@72. Those extra 64 pixels of width are already making me happy. Now I can go two column mad-programming mode!

I went ahead and bought a new video card anyway - mainly NV on the strength of the help I got here and because I'd like to give a shot to TwinView.
