Fedora Core 1 2149 can't run install shell

I just let up2date update my kernel from the install version 2115 to the last release
2149. Now, the nVidia driver no longer works. No more X.

So I first tried running the nVidia installer that I used for the initial Fedora install and
got errors.

Then I got a later install version and tried to run it - no go.
I figured I needed to go get the latest kernel-source to match the 2149 kernel I was
now trying to boot.
Then after browsing around I figured I might also need the 2149 kernel headers.
Got them, but I don't know where to put them - - need help there.

Actually, I guess I need some pointers of how to maintain two or more kernels
on the system and the support files (modules, sources, headers, etc) without
screwing up the world when it comes time to compile/install stuff for a newer
versions of the kernel - especially since I let up2date keep me, what else, up to date.

I can still use GRUB to boot to the old 2115 kernel and X still works. Thank the Lord!

the installer to attempt to download a kernel interface for your kernel from the NVIDIA
ftp site?" I answered yes, but it could not find one.
I later actually visited the nVidia site and browsed through thier ftp file hierarchy,
and sure enough, there is no interface for 2149.
Well, now what?

Somebody please help a dummy out. Just stumbling around in the dark.

If you just continue through the installer one more step past the "attempt to download a kernel interface for your kernel..", the installer will compile a custom kernel interface matching your kernel.

Here's what finally got me going:

sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run --add-this-kernel
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1-custom.run

After replying a couple of times about questions relating to prior installs, it ran
through and now I am replying with my Fedora again. Finally success.

I think I will carve the above two steps somewhere on my desk - it seems I'll be
using them _a_lot_ in the future as newer kernels arrive.

You shouldn't need to do that. If the installer can't find a precompiled binary interface, it will build one for you. That's actually what --add-this-kernel did for you, just with a few extra steps.
