Default OpenGL - Severe Problems

Hi,

I bought a new Videocard, and installed the new 5328 Drivers (installer had to compile them since I use my own kernel; 2.4.24, also tried with 2.4.23)
If I start my OpenGL Screensaver in KDE (it's called "Euphoria"), the screensaver starts, displays correctly it's contents. After a while (don't know how long exactly, about 10-30 min) my computer stops responding. But not just so, no. It's really curious:
- The Screensaver continues moving
- The Keyboard & Mouse don't respond (numlock, strg+alt+Fx don't work)
BUT:
- the Computer answers pings, the sshd and other servers are still working
- if I do a "init 3" via SSH, the computer enters runlevel 3, but the Screensaver
continues, mouse&keyboard stay locked

This didn't happen with my old GeForce 2MX and the old drivers with the same kernel. Old drivers didn't work correctly with my card though...

Model: GeForce FX 5200
IRQ: 11
Video BIOS: 04.34.20.15.00
Card Type: AGP

RedHat Linux 9.0, Kernel 2.4.24 or 2.4.23, self-compiled
Athlon 900
Gigabyte Mainboard. I think it's 7-GX or something simmilar

Has anybody seen something like that? Or has anyone an idea what could cause such behaviour?

Thanks!
Draco

Does the same thing happen using other OpenGL screensavers? Does it happen if you use a standard 2d screensaver or blank screen as well?

with non-Open-GL screensaver there are no problems.
I didn't try another GL Screensaver, I'll do that this night before shutting down my computer. I don't want to reboot *now*

Alright, start checking some details:
output of glxinfo

Is the kernel compiled with agpgart, as module or not at all?

Is agp enabled? check all the files in
ls /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/

Hi,

I checked all the files, but since I didn't find any obvious errors and I don't understand most of the output, I included their output here... Perhaps you find, what's wrong...

I don't know what "Fast Writes" and "SBA" are, but both my card and my Chipset support it according to the driver... But it's disabled - don't know why; can't remember switching that off anywhere...

Thanx!
Timo

Default nVidia AGP module

Fast Writes and Side-Band Addressing are off by default, you must manually enable them when desired, but you shouldn't until the card is operating stably as they can cause problems. The gains associated with these options are minimal, but worth using when the card is stable.

You should try using the nVidia kernel AGP driver rather than agpgart. Add this option to your XFree86 config, in the Device section for your video card:
Option "NvAGP" "1"

For many mobos the nvidia agp module is more stable than the agpgart module, afaik you just have to try both and see how it goes, however there are some listed / known reasons to use one or the other in the nvidia readme.

Your problem might be related to the OpenGL slowdown I see on my system. See here

I have a FX 5200 Ultra.

Hi,

I found the new driver 5336 today and installed it. I thought the problem would perhaps disappear with it, but it didn't. Only this time, my machine totally froze after ca. 40s of the screensaver. Not even the Magic SysRq didn't respond.

After that I included the line
Option "NvAGP" "2"
to force the use of AGPGART, and till now, there's no problem... Hope it stays that way.

Thanks for your help!

Default Still nothing

Well, i tried out all i could find, nothing works I am on the LAN (about 150 PC's) I run DCGUI and when somebody is downloading from me (about 4 MB/sec) seems, only then KDE hangs, if CPU load is not high, screensaver works all the time...
I tried Kernel 2.4.23,24 2.6.1 - nVidia drivers - 5328 and 5336 KDE hangs anyway
