Unhappy Suse 9 problem!! HELP ME PLEASE!!!!

Hi guys,
I have a BIG problem with linux :

I have followed ALL the istructions to install nvidia driver under my Suse 9 but with ALL the releases i have the same problem: Xserver ALWAYS crash with a black screen when i try the settings with sax2; it's impossible to unlock this crash with ctrl+alt+bakspace and I need to restart my pc.

when i lauch sax2 it appears always this message:

"Impossible to find monitor (0) with ID GSM4A5D"

and when I reconfigure the parameters, I can't find my monitor listed so i use the generic vesa as sax2 suggests, but it crash ALWAYS and so i use the "nv" driver.

I'm a beginner and I don't know how I can resolve this problem ... so please help me!!!

Thanks a lot

What's the log when you try for the nvidia driver?

that is the log... note the string:

"(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (NVIDIA XFree86 driver not found)"

what does it mean?

Maybe your system can't find the nvidia kernel module (it needs XFree86 module too, but this looks loaded.) Type lsmod (it lists loaded kernels modules) and look for nvidia. If it isn't there try modprobe nvidia and look again. If it shows up see if startx gets you anywhere.

Hello John,

I had about the same problem. Right after the installation I had a running xserver only with wrong monitor settings (some VESA with only 60 KHz). When I try to change this (no matter what use: Sax2 or YaST or XF86config), I get the described black sreen.
I found out, that I can restore at least the last running xserver by first backing up the /etc/X11/XF86config before playing around with SaX2 or YaST.
Tried to update to the latest NVIDIA driver; no help.
At the moment I'm trying the Suse Helpdesk to figure out the problem; when I find something; I'll tell your.

Stefan

My advice remains the same. Without running X type

modprobe nvidia

and see if it loads.

Hello whig,

in my case "modprobe nvidia" didn't do anything; said that it couldnt find the module, although I have installed the latest version for Suse 9.0 before.
When I look into ../lib/modules/ version/ there's no nvidia there, only a nvidia-script under ../lib/modules/ . Maybe the .rpm put the modules into the wrong place?
The SuSE Support couldn't help yet.

This is my case (the same):

Warning: loading /lib/modules/2.4.21-166-athlon/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.o will taint the kernel: non-GPL license - NVIDIA
See http://www.tux.org/lkml/#export-tainted for information about tainted modules
Module nvidia loaded, with warnings

and all that Stefan says is equal for me!!! Is it possible that only 2 guys have this kind of problem?

Thanks for the support, Stefan and Whig...

Everyone gets "kernel tainted" with the nvidia kernel module so don't worry about that. Just get the thing loaded into memory. The kernel module should have been installed by nVidia's installer.
