Default Poor OpenGL performance (2.6.2 kernel - 53.36 driver)

My problem: I have working OpenGL support, but it's not nearly as fast as it should be...

quinny@thor quinny $ glxgears
1533 frames in 5.0 seconds = 306.600 FPS
1913 frames in 5.0 seconds = 382.600 FPS
1913 frames in 5.0 seconds = 382.600 FPS

quinny@thor quinny $ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/cards/0
Model: GeForce FX 5200
IRQ: 16
Video BIOS: 04.34.20.27.00
Card Type: AGP

quinny@thor quinny $ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status
Status: Enabled
Driver: NVIDIA
AGP Rate: 8x
Fast Writes: Disabled
SBA: Enabled

Distro: Gentoo Linux (~x86)
Kernel: 2.6.2

System specs:
Asus PC-DL DeLuxe motherboard
Dual Xeon 2.8 Cpus
1024 MB Dual Channel DDR 3200 Memory
Rest is irrelevant

I really don't understand, I installed/configured a friends laptop (much slower than this system, offcourse) and he's got much better 3d performance...

OK, playing aroung with my settings screwed things up even more...

I can't even play fullscreen games of video files anymore...

Does anyone have any idea of what I could be doing wrong here?

The filename of the config file in the 2nd post is a typo, should be XF86Config, offcourse...
