Default Control Panel errors Fix and Compatibility problems

I have just read most of this thread and thought I'd post the link to my webpage. I've isolated the file that gives the 'Run a dll as an app' error message when opening up the control panel and I'm still working on why 25-30% of my demoscene demos don't work.

Most people seem to be able to upgrade to these drivers without any problems, however, a few like myself had problems. Nvidia have contacted me as a result of my webpage and are going to do some tests with these drivers and my set-up to try and find out what the problem is.

You can visit my site HERE

I welcome any input from anyone experiencing the compatibility problems. Any info I can give Nvidia can only help future development of these drivers

Exclamation BUG CHECK: WinXP SP1 - nv4_disp.dll - PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

Problem Description:

Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD) in nv4_disp.dll (6.13.10.4072) under Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1 when connecting to a machine running WinDVD 4.5 over a Remote Desktop connection.

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
STOP: 0x00000050 (0xE34E35C4, 0x00000000, 0xBFA4F921, 0x00000001)
nv4_disp.dll - Address BFA4F921 base at BF9BB00, DateStamp 3d94e7c9

Microsoft Error Reporting Error Signature:

BCCode: 50
BCP1: E2135A84
BCP2: 00000000
BCP3: BFA4F921
BCP4: 00000001
OSVer: 5_1_2600
SP: 1_0
Product: 256_1

Steps To Replicate Problem:

Desktop of machine #1 is set at 1280x1024, 32 bpp, 85Hz.
Launch InterVideo WinDVD 4.5 DXVA platinum on machine #1 and play any DVD. HWMC was enabled in Video options of WinDVD.
Launch Remote Desktop Connection on machine #2 and connect to machine #1 that is playing the DVD and login as user that was running WinDVD.
Once machine #2 is connected to machine #1 WinDVD 4.5 stops working and appears to hang. (I suspect that this might be due to overlays not working properly over the Remote Desktop). The Remote Desktop Connection was set to 24-bit color which is the highest setting.
Have machine #2 disconnect from machine #1.
At this point login on machine #1. WinDVD 4.5 is hung and is not responding.
CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up the Task Manager and use "End Task" on WinDVD application.
At this point machine #1 will bug check.
Additional Information:

- Video Card: MSI GeForce4 Ti 4200 128MB
- Haven't tested with other versions of the driver.
- This problem always happens.
- This problem does NOT happen with WinDVD 4.0 PLUS. WinDVD4 stops playing when the desktop is remoted.

doesn't that answer it? windvd 4.5 is the problem?

Depends on how you look at it.

Nothing a buggy user application should be able to do should cause a bug check. This isn't Win9x.

Sure, if the new version of WinDVD platinum behaved in the same manner as WinDVD4, the problem wouldn't occur.

I don't think there should exist a condition that can occur that isn't handled properly in the video driver and causes a bug check.

Bug checks should only happen due to some really catastrophic and unrecoverable condition in the kernel. Like a kernel mode memory leak.

In theory, I agree with you. But in practice, this doesn't appear to be the case. Best way to find out what's causing the problem is to download a different driver set (or 2) and run the same procedure you used to get these to crash on you. The 41.04 set that was recently leaked is for GeForce4 cards and is WHQL certified so I recommend those. If you get the same behavior with other drivers on the new version of WinDVD but not the old, odds are it's a problem with WinDVD. If the new drivers cause WinDVD to work, then you'll know it was the video card causing the problem.

Very nice site, caretaker. The level of detail you provide is excellent. It's also cool that NVIDIA actually sent you a reply and it's even better to know they intend to work on the issues you're having.
