Default Linux Driver x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run

I am using Fedora Core 1 Linux 2.4.22 with a FX 5900 Graphics Card. I tried to install the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run Driver and got the following error:

Unable to find the system utility '1d'; please make sure you have the package bin utils installed. If you have bin utils installed then please check that '1d' is in your path.

I am a newbie with Linux and any help will be highly appreciated.

It is missing ld, you need to install the binutils package.

Hi Zander,

How does the real newby know if this "ld" (wether he looks at the read-me file or not) is installed by default with a common distro like a Mandrake 9.2 (downloaded not boxed) ?

How could he even guess were to get, then to install, this binutils package when he's in front of the $ or the black screen of Xfree due to the basic GForce 4 driver.

Even if the guies here at nVidia seem to do a lot for open-source users, made the driver package easier to install, I feel a bit (!) bitter (in french we call that "spiting in the soup")...

It's really a pain in the a.. to get all that unices working.

It's not your fault, I'm sorry to be drily... thanks for contibuting anyway.

Unfortunately, there isn't much the NVIDIA installer can do about the ld requirement, interfacing with a Linux kernel requires building glue code for that specific kernel; the .run packages include precompiled object files matching a number of kernels to make the process of installing a suitable NVIDIA kernel module as transparent a process as possible with commonly used kernels, but nvidia-installer still requries a minimal tool chain in order to be able to link the precompiled glue code and the binary core into a loadable kernel module. The installer can check if ld is available and warn if it isn't, but the number and diversity of GNU/Linux distributions alone makes anything beyond that unfeasible. It would be wonderful if users never had to deal with these technical details, but for now, at least, it can't be helped.

I understand. Thanks for explanation.

I finally used my brain, launched the old k6 tower to search the web about these binutils. Through urpmi command line, insert the CD and it's all OK, now.

All that sweat just to be aware (yes, to be able to... indeed) of what my machine do, not like with some Redmond's OS...

Thanks again.
