Exclamation 5336 GLX Freeze / Kernel Panic

Hello,

We have been noticing routine kernel panics/complete system freezes (unresponsive to magic sysreq key -- flashing keyboard leds) on several systems running both 2.4 and 2.6 kernels using the 5336 kernel/glx drivers. These systems are using different nvidia cards, ranging from a GF2MX to a Ti4200 to a FX5200.

What happens is that upon returning to one of these workstations after leaving it for some time, the system is frozen, and a fixed image of an OpenGL screensaver (from xscreensaver; it happens with any, it seems, for example Endgame) is on the screen. Debian is the operating system on all of the computers.

This glx instability is new to the 5xxx drivers...the previous ones didn't have this problem.

We've been kind of surprised that nobody else has seemed to report this behavior...it's occurred for us on different machines running different processors/chipsets/nvidia cards...the only common feature being the 5336 kernel/X driver.

Would anybody from nVidia (or elsewhere) have any insight? We can provide any more information that is necessary.

Thank you.

Did you observe this problem with OpenGL screensavers exclusively or most often? Does it reliably reproduce with specific OpenGL screensavers? Are the kernel panics random or similar in nature (could you post examples)?

OpenGL screensavers can be run manually, through xscreensaver-demo, or even on their own and they are ok sometimes, but this freezing occurs after not touching the computer for several hours usually (allowing it to activate the screensaver and cycle through them randomly on its own). It tends to happen specifically with Endgame, but today it was with GLSnake. (And I only know this by what image is left frozen on the screen.)

I think below is the last message that was in my message log before the latest freeze on this machine (a P4 running 2.6.2).

Code:
Feb 20 23:22:54 hydra kernel: 1: nvidia: trying to map 0xe747d000 to kernel space, but we're in an interrupt or holding a spinlock
The only other (possibly, but I don't think so) relevant info is from system startup, these messages (which I believe appear on all of these nvidia systems).

Code:
Feb 20 16:33:58 hydra kernel: 1: nvidia: loading NVIDIA Linux x86 NVIDIA Kernel Module 1.0-5336 Wed Jan 14 18:29:26 PST 2004

Feb 20 16:33:58 hydra kernel: devfs_mk_cdev: could not append to parent for nvidia0

Exclamation Any fixes?

Other people have experienced this problem, so it seems, looking over the forum.

While we can't be completely sure, we do have good evidence that this issue is an nVidia driver issue, starting with the 5xxx series (multiple machines, archs, kernels, X vers, etc).

Would anybody from nVidia care to comment on this issue?

That would be much appreciated.
