Default GeForce4 Ti4200

I'm trying to get my GeForce4 Ti4200 working with Redhat 9, but
when X starts the screen is garbled. It looks like it is still in ascii
mode with random strange characters filling the screen.
<ctrl><alt><backspace> doesn't work and the only thing I can
do is reboot.

Card = chaintech Geforce4 Ti 4200 128Meg
driver = 1.0-5336 IA 32
distribution = RedHat 9 w/ current updates
video bios version = 04.25.00.37.00
processor = AMD Athlon XP 2000+
motherboard = Epox 8RDA
