It sounds like you need to properly configure your monitor settings. You should do this before attempting to change to the nVidia driver.

Boot to the terminal, in runlevel 3. You can do this either by editing /etc/inittab, or by using the command (once you boot and it fails to load X):
telinit 3

You must be logged in as root. Run this command (assuming you are running RedHat 9):
redhat-config-xfree86

You should select your video card (if you have a Geforce FX card select "Geforce 2 Generic"), your monitor (if it is not listed select a generic monitor of the proper size, do not edit the refresh rates manually), and then accept the changes.

Boot back to runlevel 5 (graphical mode), again either edit inittab and reboot or use:
telinit 5

Verify that your config file now has selected to use the "nv" driver for your video card, you can do that with this command:
Code:
cat /etc/X11/XF86Config | grep Driver
It should return this line (and maybe a few others):
Code:
Driver "nv"
If X fails to boot up and display the login prompt you will need to research your monitor's capabilities to determine if the proper refresh rates are being used, visit the manufacturer's website.

If you still have errors or failures, post the contents of these files as attachments to the forum:
/etc/X11/XF86Config
/var/log/XFree86.0.log
