Default so if i have a file missing in windows

...uhh..say the ntoskrnl.dll - does that mean an automatic re-install for the windows 2K OS?

it's either missing or corrupted, and it just started yesterday after i went into my slave drive (that used to be my main drive) that didn't have the old OS install completely removed.
the performance of the machine got strange, and i tried to shut the folder down manually - i clicked "end program now" the explorer.exe went down, and hung, and i restarted directly from there - on boot up - i get the ntoskrnl message and no windows since...not even safe mode.

so, i'm basically screwed, yes? i have to do a complete re-install?

LOL! I was gonna say if you do have a problem such as this then it would get more attention in the proper forum.

Won't a simple repair work?

Boot off the Windows install CD and as the setup program starts there should be something that says "Press F2 to run automated system recovery," if not then after it starts the installation a menu will come up that asks if you want to install a fresh copy or repair an existing one.

During my AthlonXP-M fiasco, I thought I needed to reinstall Windows but doing a repair worked just fine. Got my computer back with no data lost.

Sounds like a MBR issue. Seems to be looking in the wrong place for the OS

.

actually i just figured out that it was a hard drive meltdown...

WD 120 gig 7200 rpm, less than 5 months old - imploded leaving no prisoners...

70 gigs of data out the window without a trace...argh..

Y'know, I wouldn't mind paying extra for hard drives if they started using higher quality components. I've never understood this whole gigabyte for the dollar thing.

I'd be curious to see what the return rate of the WD Raptor is as compared to the Caviar and non-enterprise-grade drives.

Besides, IBM sold off its hard drive division to Hitachi.
