Default Poor tvout playback quality

As I already understood XVideo is disabled when using twin (tvout) mode, right?
But then I get really bad movie playback quality.

I have a Dell Dimention with an FX 5200 nvidia card. Running Gentoo on 2.6.3 kernel (SMP, preemptive).
Playing movies on a regular display (without twin mode) is fine. When starting up a twinview screen - the picture quality drops noticably: frames are usually displayed in a way causing some weired stripes-like mixture...
I tried any of "xv", "x11" and "gl2" video output drivers supported by mplayer - all seem to suffer from those glitches...

Any ideas / tips how to improove the quality of the playback when running twin mode?
