Lightbulb WISH: nForce driver package updated for kernel 2.6

Yes I am currently aware that the 2.6.x tree both has ALSA support (AC'97/nForce), and a reverse engineered nvnet driver, but they aren't perfect.

Perhaps nvidia can get around and make and fix the alsa module for them? The current driver they use has caused drastic instability with my machine (kernel segmentation faults, file corruption because of the kernel segfaults, etc).

I'd use the nforce package for 2.4.x kernel, but that kernel doesn't like my computer all that much, 2.6.x the only problem I've had is the sound driver.

Not to mention, i would prefer an nvnet driver from nvidia rather than a reverse engineered one.

so PLEASE, make a 2.6.x series kernel driver pack for the nforce board!

(btw if u got any info on how to get rid of the kernel-segfaulting ALSA problem, PLEASE tell me how to resolve this issue, I'm using a no-sound kernel right now and its driving me insane! The silence... its so loud...)

This is relevant as of kernel 2.6.5, KDE 3.2.1, gcc 3.3.3

If you aren't happy with the current Alsa driver, nobody stops you to use the oss i810 driver which is shipped with 2.6x too I think. Further also try to update your alsa libraries and stuff like that.

Yes the 2.6.x has support for nforce sound and the OSS i810 driver is there.

Their existence does not let anyone off the hook, I think the request is a good one... the video drivers work now, the nforce drivers should too.

I'm running 2.6.5 and I'm using the kernel drivers for nforce mobo chipset support and nvidia 5336 for graphics support.

The kernel IDE, agp and net drivers seem to be VERY fast. The Alsa sound drivers leave something to be desired, I've had a devil of a time getting them configured right, and I still can't get sound out of Mplayer. I'm not all that impressed with the sound quality either.

The chipset drivers work fine, except since I compiled and installed the kernel, the machine has been freezing hard requiring a hard restart. This is unthinkable for a Linux machine. I've tried recompiling with various options enabled or disabled.

The stock 2.4.22 kernel that came with my Slackware distribution ran like a champ. I was seduced by the speed of the 2.6 kernel drivers, but it hasn't been easy getting a stable working machine. I'd like to see nvidia drivers too.

Not everyone has your problem and Windows curtainly has it's problems with the nforce chipset as well, as for ALSA I find that the driver are equivalent to Creative ones for sound quality. I'm glad I never jumped onto that nForce bandwaggon.

I have compiled 2.6.4 kernel, and now I cannot install drivers for my NForce chipset (nvnet, nvgart and nvaudio), each time I try to run make... it returns me some odd errors...
under 2.4.23 kernel it works fine.
Distro: Slackware current (9.1)
MB: Abit NF7
Proc: AMD Burton XP 2500+
RAM: 512MB Hynix PC 400
drivers I use are newest available in drivers section of nvidia.com

P.S. driver for video card works fine, I have FX 5200, and I have used also newest driver available from nvidia.

P.P.S.
most of all I need nvnet driver, as I connect to the internet via WIFI, and I cannot do it until integrated LAN starts working :-(

Try the 'forcedeth' module included with recent 2.6 kernels . Works perfectly for me.

I would wery much like to see at least a sound driver from nvidia. forcedeth is working ok now and has had some improvements from when it was released (2.6.1-mm2?) to the current 2.6.5 kernel. But there is still no hardware mixing for the nForce sound device.

So please! Give uss a 2.6 sound driver to enable hardware mixing
