I finally had a chance to review this guide from my home system that has my Ti4600. Following this, 1024x768 with Quincux in D3D runs fabulously and looks no worse than before, from what I can see. I might play around with a couple more settings, but I think we might have a winner here.

Side note w/regard to mouse lag. You can set it to false in the UT2003.ini file, but if you have RivaTuner in the D3D settings, under vsync, set your prerender limit to 2. That should reduce any mouse lag significantly while still allowing you to have the better performance that setting mouse lag to false in the .ini file provides.

I have to start turning things down, people are moving faster than my framerate and I can't keep a bead on em...I'm gonna have to go down to *GASP* 800x600. My GF3 and 1900+ just doesn't cut it anymore...

I was wondering if that would work, but I was too lazy to try it...

Thanks, Saturn!

No problemo.

I have that limit set to 2 anyway because at 3 or above I get really bad mouse lag in all my D3D games (except GTA3). D3D is working sooo much better for me now that I've followed this guide. I can even use Quincux AA at resolutions as high as 1280x960. At that point, aliasing is all but gone and visual quality is top notch.

Yeah... even with my not-so-hot box, the game runs smooooooooth as butta.

I dunno, I need to try to use 1280x960 again... couldn't get used to it before.

Maybe it'll be OK now...

Sound tweaks have been added now.

I have deleted some extra features because of posting limits. Is it possible to input even more text?

OGL will be optimized as well because of the Linux client. No D3D under any other OSes, so OGL users won't be left out in the cold.

Well, that's great news. The better improved both APIs are, the more choices the user will have for their specific hardware.

I find my gf3ti200 plus AXP 1800+ and 256 megs on 40.72 plays the game great...in OGL mode...in d3d mode it stutters like hell. Wierd.

Baron, can I ask you what settings you have the game set to? You seem to be enjoying great FPS, but sometimes, Plunge will seriously bring my system to its knees. Or do you now experience FPS drops in Plunge? BTW, did staring at grass kill your FPS?

I'm not entirely sure what grass you mean--in Antalus, say, the grass there doesn't do anything really to my FPS.

All my details are high except for texture and physics--that's because I've got a GF3 at stock speeds instead of a Ti500 with faster ram or a GF4 with 128 megs for the textures and I only have a 1.4 Ghz Athlon.

Still, even in Plunge, I don't go below 30 FPS. Bombing run maps, which are the ones I usually play, run fantastically.

Plus, there's still no stuttering

--edit--and if you think I'm copping out for running with normal textures, BAH. I don't have a GF4 and in Instagib, going below 30FPS = death. --/edit--

Oh, staring at grass directly, and I mean, directly filling the screen with grass will kill your FPS, at least in OpenGL. D3D doesn't have this issue. When I say grass, I mean the foliage, not the textures on the ground in Antalus that looks like grass. When you spectate at the beginning, try filling the screen with them. FPS drops to around 35. Not a pretty picture. I strongly recommend you disable them as they might make a FPS hit when you run through some. Although it only occurs when you stare directly at them closely, it doesn't hurt very much to disable it. Again, this is only an issue of OpenGL. I wonder if the way the grass is rendered is the same with the trees in MOHAA. I remember how the snow level kills FPS and they are both similar situations. Anyway, disable it Baron.

Also, additional testing reveals that removing foliage in any API does increase FPS by about 5-7 or so. I will change my guide accordingly.
