Default console/x problem

Sorry if this is a dup but I have tried searching. (I might not be wording it the same way)

The problem is once I start x I can't go back into console mode. The first time I do the cursor gets funky. The second time it messes up the screen and I have to <ctrl><alt><delete> to reboot. Plus when I am in X I can't change to a virtual console and then go back to X or I get the same problem.

I am running:

Slack 9.1
Asus A7N8X Deluxe
Geforce 2 (Ultra or something)
X 4.3.0
Nvidia Driver 1.0-5336

I am using NvAGP and the frame buffer.

Any ideas?

Thanks

It resembles much what I said in my post.

Still can't solve that.

It seems like the console is trying to use any graphic mode but it switches
wrongly and I can't think in a way to fix this strange behavior (if I am wright).

Tell me if you have any good (or bad) news...

That would be your problem, I think. Try booting in non fb mode and see if it fixes things. (At least it does fix it in Mdk 9.2, and I've seen posts before about how fb and the nvidia driver don't like each others)

Booting without fb is a must, and although your problem does sound different then what happened on my computer, I still think that it relates to fb issues (I don't even have it compiled in the kernel because it flat out does not work). I have tried the fb on gentoo's sources for both 2.4 and 2.6 and the vanilla sources for 2.4 and 2.6, all of which failed. I can live without frame buffer, however, I would really like to be able to have multiple X sessions running simutainously. It seems that whatever is causing the fb problem also doesn't allow you to have multiple X sessions. However, when I run startx it gives some output that is a little useful:

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to allocate external video decoder object
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***

Fatal server error:
AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0

It seems that the drivers are holding onto the card's fb and won't let the kernel's fb or another driver use it. I have looked through the options and haven't really noticed anything that would help this out. If anyone knows how to fix this, it might help all of the fb problems. BTW: I run Gentoo on an AMD 2400+ and have a TNT2 via PCI.
