Honestly, I think you are representing the vast minority with your approach to gaming.

I believe the majority of users out there do shut-off applications and utilities. In the case of the Anti-Virus software, you are talking about a measureable performance hit when running a taxing game...

So DVD comparisons are unfortunately out of the question.

On another note, I don't know about the rest of you, but I make sure to shut down as many applications as I can before playing my games. Gotta make sure to squeeze every last bit of performance out of 'em.

Please do not show the results of the XOR test. XOR has a issue where it will take a small color difference and represent it as a large error value when in fact the error was the smallest allowed. Many people do not know how to read and understand the results of an XOR test. Using a straight subtraction is a better way to show image quality.

So far, we've got benchmarks for 3dMark, Q3, BF1942, UT2003, Jedi Knight 2, and the new NFS Hot Pursuit 2 Demo...all done at 1600*1200, 1280*1024 ( 1280*960 for BF1942 ), and 1024*768......with no image features, 6x FSAA only, and 6x FSAA/16X Aniso.

I'll be throwing in an image comparison with an Abit OTES at the end of the article...

Anything else you'd like to see before I wrap this up???

Sounds like it is going to be a repeat of every other review out there... I hope I am pleasantly surprised.

Minimum frame rates would add a nice touch

Like I said, running tons of benchmarks is a waste of your and everyone else's time. It would basically amount to a little bit of ego stroking for the local ati zealots, but really wouldn't add anything that hasn't already been covered.

One of the things that always makes a site like Beyond3d's reviews better than everyone else's, is they're not just slapping up numbers for people to masturbate about. They're digging stuff up, like the shortcomings of a given card. Stuff like angles anisotropic filtering doesn't work on, and what a card is really doing in FSAA, huge drops in framerates with no seeming explaination, that sort of thing.

Of course, that might take more attention than just starting up some benchmarks.

Trust me....this review will have a few unique characteristics....
Nothing earth shattering...but a nice change nonetheless...

This boils down to a couple of things - how knowledgeable the reviewer is in the subject area and the target audience of the web site.

Since Dave Baumann's expertise in the area of 3D graphics is greater than your typical reviewer, we can't expect the majority of reviews to be up to the standards of the Beyond3D audience.

I agree that some reviews are bland - especially those that contain a bunch of benchmark results with little or no commentary.
But there are also reviews that concentrate on game play performance, which I find interesting to read.

Then we have the minimum frame rate statistic which is often overlooked in today's reviews. The minimum frame rate often adds value by exposing weaknesses that aren't shown in the average frame rate.

For example, take note of the minimim frame rate from the Radeon 9700 in HardOCP's UT2003 benchmarking guide.

Compared to the results from the GeForce4 Ti 4600 in our nForce2 review.

dm-antalus

ctf-citadel
39.252628 / 141.646011 / 364.667511 fps

This type of analysis could cause ATI to investigate why a lower than expected minimum frame rate is occurring.

MikeC yep. What i really want is a minimum frame rate of 60 fps but i guess thats not possible yet in all games like unreal 2003
I guess 30 fps Minimum frame rates is good enough for now but maybe its not.

I also by the way would like to see Minimum frame rates in the review too. Thanks
