Hang on there hoss. Not to start an agurement with you but that statement is not 100% correct for every one. Can you tell me the exact day I can walk into a Best Buy and buy the R420/NV40? Can you tell me how much it will cost? Can you tell me just how fast it will be compared to my card today? Fact is all 3 of those are unknows. Yes we have ideas on dates, yes we know that it will be $400+ for the high end and yes we know it will be faster. But you can not qaunity by just how much. Why spend money on the NV40 when we all know that the NV50 is faster? Some people here may only play that game once. Maybe its worth the cost to them to get the 9800xt now, get better framerates NOW in the game that they will not play again once they are done. Then wait till the dust settles on the NV40/R420 as we know no launch had perfect drivers. There is some sense in waiting till the "dust settles" a bit so we can see all of the real facts and issues. Then we get the NV40/R420 This thinking is perfectly valid and some may just do that.

Everyone of us has his own demands from the upcoming cards. Broadly speaking, some people would buy a new card without a second thought because they would consider a, say 2% increase in performance over their old one worthy, others would like to see at least a 30-40% difference in order to purchase it (not to mention prices). It's how you approach it. With that in mind, there's not a "definite" or "gold" buy for a specific card. My point? Let's wait for the specs and prices first, then we'll see

Sure I was speaking more from personal experience and maybe that senario might not fit the whole but IMO is does encompasses a majority of us. You can always wait for the second generation of new gpu's but I just don't see the IHV's going back to the old 6 month product cycle's anymore. O well, we'll soon find out

I got it and have to say I'm dam impressed. To start, this is one big game, 5 CDs.

I played both demos and the retail game does run smoother. It's nice to see a game company that knows how to code a game properly because there are sure some that don't (DX2 comes to mind). This game uses the most ram of any game I have ever seen (checking Task Manager after a game shows around 813 megs and it would even be higher than that at very high settings for everything). Proof that 512 megs is no longer sufficient for future gaming (if you don't want disk swapping).

I have fiddled with the options to get the best quality I can and run at acceptable frame rates for my tastes (using system in my sig).

Texture quality - high.
Aniso - 1.
FSAA - 2X.
Environment - high.
shadows - low.
effects - medium.
water - medium.
Sound Hardware mixing on.
Set at EAX 2.

That is what I have settled into so far to run the way I like. Anything more than this and I lose the smoothness in movement that I must have to enjoy my gaming. This game definitely will put the system on full stress, that's for sure. Nvidia's/ATIs next offering probably is the ticket to run this game full out.

Anyone who says they can run this game smooth at full extreme quality settings, I don't believe it. Or let me put it this way, their definition of 'smoothness' is not the same as mine (I have the 128 meg 9800 Pro so I imagine 256 megs would do better). MAYBE the NV40 or R420 could do it.

Anyway, this game looks fantastic and is definitely the wave of the future.

Your system is more than enough capable to run Far Cry except your 9700 Pro card, it had memory limited of 128Mb. Far Cry will need videocards with 256Mb and more to run smooth with all graphics options at maximum.

I needed to upgrade when I played the demo but that changed when I played retail version, I am really very surprised it ran very smooth at 1024x768 with 8xAF and all graphics and sound options to the maximum. I see no urgently need to upgrade soon, my system is now extended to further 6 months until it upgrade with Athlon 64 and NV45 when Doom 3 and Half Life 2 due out, by that time my system will be 3 years old.

I dont think anyone wonders that.

If you cant handle admitting you were wrong, then by all means dont visit forums. There wasnt any flaming, aside from someone calling my post idiotic.

My point was well made. Why you have to keep this up is beyond me. It is just a video card. Let it go.
