The 3123 drivers freeze up when I try to start GIMP 1.3. Does this have to do with GIMP 1.3 using GTK2?
Is anyone else getting problems with GIMP 1.3 or any other apps that use GTK 2.0? -- Debian SID Kernel 2.4.19 |

I was getting random crashes and degraded performance in UT2K3 and Return to Castle Wolfenstein with 3123 drivers.
After going back to 2960 problems have disappeared. Perhaps it was just a coincidence? === P4 1.8 A Asus P4B266 GF4 Ti 4600 Debian (Sarge) 2.4.18 kernel |

Try this:
(courtesy of Branden Robinson) "1) apt-get install xserver-xfree86-dbg 2) ln -s /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86-debug /etc/X11/X (The debconf server selection dialog doesn't list xserver-xfree86-dbg fore reasons I don't yet understand.) 3) Start your X session. 4) Reproduce the hang. 5) Get to a shell (remote console, VT switch if that works, or ssh). 6) Determine the PID of the running X server. 7) gdb $PID /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86-debug (this connects the debugger to the running X server) 8) At the gdb prompt, type "bt full". ...and let us know on this list what you find out." |

The only place I found those packages was at:
http://people.debian.org/~branden/sid/i386/ And it won't work with my current version of Xfree. Do you know where any xserver-xfree86-dbg packages would be for 4.1.0-17? |

I'm having intermittent issues with Gimp 1.3 in general (1.3.8, actually). About half the time, when I'm doing bezier curve selection, when I close off the bezier, it locks up X with a message in the console I started it from: "segfault, do you want to [E]xit, [C]ontinue", and a couple other options. But X is frozen (well, the mouse works, but the display doesn't), so I can't get focus back to that console to hit any keys.
Ctrl-Alt-F2'ing and "killall gimp" has worked. If all else fails, remember that Gimp 1.3 is a development release. ![]()

That would be great but all I have to do is start GIMP, it will freeze during loading with those drivers.
I might downgrade to the 1.2 version just because I have had some other minor issues with this new release of GIMP. |

Okay, I tested some other things:
Gimp1.2 works fine with the 3123 drivers Gimp1.3 does not (it uses GTK2.0) I checked my other GTK2.0 program, freeciv, and it also freezes. This happens regardless of whether the AGP is enabled or not. When I tested freeciv I noticed that my system monitor suddenly reoprts 100% CPU usage! I think that is the "freeze" am I experiencing. When it happens the mouse works fine and I can even access my laptop's BIOS with the "Fn" key, but the Xserver doesn't respond to mouse clicks or the keyboard. I also remember something weird happening to the console windows. I'll take a picture with my digital camera if I can get it to happen again before I go back to the 2960 drivers. (I keep the built debian packages around so I can swap them around easily) Last edited by jon787; 10-02-02 at 06:52 PM. |

jon787, try
Option "NoRenderAccel" "true" in your XF86Config. Worked for me at the expense of being slightly slower for 2D Stephen. |
