Unhappy Toshiba P10 Widescreen, Mandrake 10 woes

I bought myself a swanky new laptop, the Toshiba P10, it comes with a nVidia GeForce FX and a lovely widescreen. I installed Mandrake 10 Community.

I can get x working no problem with the xFree nv generic driver as long as I am using an external flat panel via my KVM - which is great, BUT its a laptop, and the main point of these things (IMHO) is portalbility, so carrying around a 17" flat panel screen sort of defeats the object really. I'd like to get the LCD display on the Tosh itself going .. anyone had any experience of this achievement yet with a P10 Widescreen. I assume Mandrake 9x or 10 successes would be OK.

Please help, my only crime was having a desire to play DVD's in widescreen without the black bits top and bottom of the screen :-p I'm sorry for my foolishness.

I did go look at Toshiba Linux forum and found this:
=================================
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "wide-screen-lcd"
HorizSync 30-64
VertRefresh 50-100
Modeline "1440x900" 106.47 1440 1520 1672 1904 900 901
904 932 -HSync +Vsync
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "geforce-fx-go-5600"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "NvAgp" "3"
Option "IgnoreEDID" "true"
Option "NoLogo" "on"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "screen1"
Device "geforce-fx-go-5600"
Monitor "wide-screen-lcd"
DefaultDepth 24

SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1440x900"
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection
EndSection
================================

But it did not work, even though it seems to match all the specs recarding the LCD Panel and nVidia documentation .. will it be a case of just getting the lasttest nvidia linux drivers?

Many thanks for anyones help.

Hi

You have a couple of lines that are incorrect.
Make sure you monitor section is the following ...

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "wide-screen-lcd"
HorizSync 40 - 100
VertRefresh 40 - 120
Modeline "1440x900" 97.54 1440 1472 1840 1872 900 919 927 946
Option "dpms"
EndSection

Enjoy ....

Thanks for the Monitor stuff, see the config file below .. got the resolutions wrong earlier, but got em now and it all works. I put my xconfig file in full, for anyone else who has a Tosh P10 Widescreen and is daft enough to want to put Mandrake on it. Hope its useful to some one.

Once again. Thanks. I can watch DVD's in bed now!

# Initially File generated by XFdrake.

# /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

# THIS WORKS WITH A TOSHIBA Satellite P10-304 Widescreen Notebook running
# MANDRAKE 10 Community, as a Vanilla Defailt Install with the Kernel Source additionally
# installed.
# At the end of the GUI Install process of Mandrake, set up X using the Wizard (it wont work by the way)
# but ensure that you set the Option to runlevel 3 (not startx on boot) - because Mandrake does not
# put a link into /etc/X11/ to the X Server and Binaries and stuff if you dont (just being lazy on my
# part).

# The nVidia Drivers were obtained from http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_d..._1.0-5336.html
# and the driver file used was:
# Version: 1.0-5336
# Operating System: Linux IA32
# Release Date: January 26, 2004

# Run the nVidia driver and let it complie a Kernel Interface (as one does not exist according to the Installer)

# ONLY ON A TOSH P10 running Mandrake 10 copy the below into the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file created by
# XFdrake on the install. It may work for other machines, but I have only got this working on this hardware
# and Mandrake 10 - so I dont know.

# Many thanks to 'sharc' for the pointer in the Monitors section.
# I also made use of http://xtiming.sourceforge.net/
# to work out the Modeline once I sussed the Max Resolution of the damn widescreen LCD Panel was 1280x800!

Default I am having the same problem with my P15-S479

I was having problems with my Toshiba notebook as well. I finally was able to make it run with a vesa driver but I need to update the drivers from Nvidia as well. I might try your solution because it seems as though we had a similar problem and I know that we are using the same driver from Nvidia.

I actually joined this forum purely because of the successful solution to getting the display on a toshiba p10 to actually display 1280x800 resolution. Nice one guys - I've been trying to do this for months (and yes I read the manual etc!), so thanks for posting a solution and keep up the good work
