Come on, we all know how bad is nvidia's dx9 performance. We just need a sticky post with shadermark results, some true dx9 shader results like TR : AoD's DoF effect.. etc. No more beating on dead horse

I was speaking to DX9 FPS comparisons I have seen between the 5900U/5950u and 9800pro at first. I am fully aware a 9800pro will spank a 5700u in FPS comparisons and that they are NOT equal. I own both cards and am very familiar with them. In the case of the 5700u/9800pro I was only addressing how 'smooth' the FPS is. I did not intend to suggest a straight power comparison should be done between the 9800pro/5700u. I am relating from my personal experience ,the 5700u has less micro pausing in games, like Far Cry, and many others. Again the intro of that post was about reviews, posts and comparisons I have seen with the 5900u/5950, and the 9800pro.

I will try to elaborate more clearly on issues like these in the future.

But I said it before, I'll say it again. Far Cry is HEAVILY gpu dependant.
Is this really true? I've been trying to figure out some of the numbers I'm seeing. In "good" areas of the game where the framerate is high my AIW 9800 Pro is usually 10-20 fps higher than my 5900U. But, when I hit the "bad" areas where the framerate plummets, 25 or so is normal for the AIW and 23 or so for the 5900U. So, what levels out the lows? I was thinking maybe it was the CPU. My cpus are XP 3000+ for the AIW system and XP 2800+ (overclocked to almost a 3000+ level) for the nvidia system.

The frame rate dropouts are something I've noticed on ATI cards. UT2003 was the first place I really noticed it. My average and overall frame rates were higher on my ATI cards, but at the same time on certain maps the rate would bottom out (sometimes dropping into the 20s in spots). But this was not a symptom on any NVIDIA card. While frames were overall lower, they were more consistent across the board. I didn't notice it so much in the Far Cry demo, but it's something I will pay attention to when I get the full game in a couple days.

Its more noticeable when framerate drop from very smooth(say 60fps) to jerky(say 20fps) than drop from not-so-smooth(say 35fps) to 20fps, its common sense. I played bf1942 with 5800 everything was never smooth but lows were not as noticeable comparing to playing it on 9800pro but still its much more smooth overall on 9800pro. Jerky all the way VS little slow down in smooth play.

I've heard how pitiful the GeForceFX is with DX9 shaders. Now I can actually SEE the difference. Let's hope Nvidia can correct this problem with the new NV40. Otherwise, ATI will keep walking away with the performance crown. "The Way it's Meant to be Played" is a real JOKE!!! It seems ATI's cards are more suited to the newest games.

Guess I will just agree to disagree in this, and say "I like pie."

To me, frame rates as low as 26-35 are butter smooth on my 5700u this was the case with my geforce 4 ti 4600, and a geforce 3 ti 500 I have owned. In games where the 5700u turns in between 35-100fps I see the same behavior as the lower fps games, smooth play.

"The damn game chokes on a 9800xt at that level with a 3.2 800fsb processor."

I have a P4 3.0 not O.C.,with a 9800XT and have no probs playing the game at 1280*1024, i even use that res online, all fx max.
I haven't tried fsaa in it, and i guess it would choke, but works great with 8X quality Anisotropic filtering ( trilinear ).

A P4 3.2 or a AMD 3.2 should run this game pretty well with a 9800XT.
Awesome game.
The 2.4 CPU could be weakest "link". 1024*768 res should be ok.
