Default XFree86 fails to start after reboot

I download and build the NVidia drivers. At this time I am using a console login. Neither kdm or xdm are running according to 'ps -aux'. Running startx works. I get a Nvidia splash screen. It works fine. (see nvidiasetup.txt & XFree86.0.FIRSTTIME.log.txt attached if necessary).

I shutdown my machine and turn it on again. Linux starts up kdm at boot. This fails (not sure where to find the log for this) leaving me at a console login. If I login and then run startx it fails with "(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVdriver kernel module!". (see XFree86.0.REBOOT.log.txt attached).

I saw this forum entry http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=26595 which sounded promising. Unfortunately a diff between XF86Config-4 before reboot when it was working and after boot when it was not shows no changes.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks

Debian has its own module mangment tools, if you have not run them correctly they will over write the Nvidia module loading information.

Ok, this sounds very promising. I'm sure you've heard it before, but I'm new to debian. I thought you might have been referring to dpkg-reconfigure. I tried 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86' and answered No to having debian manage my XFree configuration. After checking through my XF86Config-4 file again, and running X with startx. I still get the same problem. startx is finding the module though which is puzzling (see below).

Can you tell me how to prevent debian's module management tools from overwriting the Nvidia module loading information? Or can you suggest any suitable google keywords / howto's / etc config files / man pages too look at?

Thanks for your help!

I've found the following browsing through the forum: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...ghlight=debian
Again, it looks promising.

There they talk about addind nvidia to /etc/rc.modules. I don't have such a file on my debian system. But I do have a /etc/modules.conf which is derived from /etc/modutils by update-modules.

I think I see what you were getting at rednuht. Because I have not selected nvidia from within the modconf utility, then something is being done to the nvidia module at startup?

Can anyone confirm this, if so can you tell me what I can do about it?

Thanks
