You can download 5.1 dolby digitally encoded dvd rips that are decent quality. Most people don't even notice the artifacts in them, or can't see the difference in quality. Like I said, Zoom Player supports spdif output (dolby digital)

the thing is that most rips aren't super high quality nor do they use DD audio. it's hard to find movies like that. most are encoded explicitly to fit on one cd(divx)

all this talk about Zoom Player has me interested. maybe i'll take a look later

I don't like Divx player at all.
Two thumbs up for the Koala Player! I just tried it and it plays my divx movies better than divx 5 pro. Some of my movies were corrupted, like the sound was delayed by 1/2 sec or they would crash at a certain point, but the Koala Player can handle it

anyone know any good MPEG players for Linux? I've got DivX to play the .avi files, but I have nothing for mpeg files.

Koala isn't free, has an "antique" ui, has very few choices for control options, etc. I was impressed with the subtitle, and corrupt frame handling capabilities. As I've said, all the players I've tried seem to have thier strengths and weakness's. For my purposes Zoom Player and Sasami seem to be best. After all, how often do you play films with subtitles, or corrupt frames?

There are billions of ways to have spyware enabled even by unchecking the "security" options.
So how do you know if most of the others don't have spyware? Or do you only use open source stuff and go through the code by hand and compile it yourself before using?

Anyone else disappointed with the new interface in Zoom Player? I was thrilled to read about all the new features and lower overhead. I'm hoping I can make this one act and look more like the old.

Wouldn't Zone Alarm alert you to spyware?
