Question Open source Nvidia 3D driver exists?

Hi.
Just upgraded xorg to latest fedora development release. I was very surprised when reading the following in the changelog:

* fre apr 02 2004 Mike A. Harris <mharris@redhat.com> 0.6.6-0.2004_03_30.2
- Added new open source Nvidia DRI 3D driver today, and enabled it on x86,
ia64, and x86_64 only, as those are the only architectures that have been
tested. It builds cleanly with xorg, but is totally untested so far.

Anyone knows anything about this? Is it any good? Does this mean we don't longer need Nvidias closed source drivers?

/Daniel

There was an opensource nVidia driver back in UtahGLX (I think that is correct). Maybe somebody ported it. I believe there are a few opensource 3D drivers that haven't been ported. Most of the chipsets are pretty old and it probably wouldn't be worth it to port them now.

I downloaded the fedora xorg snapshot and this is what is really in the ChangeLog:
* Thu Apr 1 2004 Mike A. Harris <mharris@redhat.com> 0.6.6-0.2004_03_30.2
- Added new open source Nvidia DRI 3D driver today, and enabled it on x86,
ia64, and x86_64 only, as those are the only architectures that have been
tested. It builds cleanly with xorg, but is totally untested so far.

Note the date "Thu Apr 1", so because of that there's already a big chance that it is fake. For the rest I did some checks on the source code and it doesn't contain the driver. The only "new" nvidia driver is a simple one for keith packard's kdrive.

Note that it is indeed possible to build an opensource 3d driver for nvidia cards. There's enough info in the wild to build a driver with TNT class features.
