Default Problems installing Nvidia driver

Hello there,

I have a debian system running kernel 2.4.18-k7 and a Nvidia GeForce 4 MX440. I recently downloaded and tried to install the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run driver but I could't install it. It shows the following message:

ERROR: Unable to determine the NVIDIA kernel module filename.

The complete nvidia-installer log is attached to this message. The funny thing is that I did manage to install this driver under kernel 2.6. However, I'd rather stay with the 2.4 kernel, so please someone help me!

i'm running 2.4 as well, but have been thinking about trying 2.6, to see if it might solve some of my nvidia problems. but if i do i would prefer that the kernels coexist via a grub boot menu. is thiss possible, and would there be any complications or precautions with runnng the nvidia installer script, any necesarry command line options for instance. or would it simply suffice to run it once while running on each kernel. also i looked to day at debian.org and couldn't find the source for the 2.6 kernel, where are these, are they not necesarry to recompile a custom 2.6 kernel?

sincerely,

michael

Whats wrong with staying with the 2.6?, it's been stable as 2.4 for me and so has the nvidia driver.

Well, to me the 2.6 kernel is crashing too much. And I mean REALLY BAD crashes (those crashes that freezes everything). So I'd rather stay with the 2.4 kernel and I would like to install the latest Nvidia driver. However I'm having that problem mentioned in the top of this thread. Anybody knows a solution?
