First time using Linux, help

I just installed Mandrake 9.2 and I was trying to install the nvidia drivers and it wouldn't work. I went to the konsole (pressed ctrl+alt+f1), logged in as root, typed in sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run per the instructions, and it didn't work. I'm not sure what else to do. any help would be appreciated.

A better discription of it didnot work would help, errors, messages?

HI !

Maybe you have to install the kernel interface ? I think you'll find it under "install packages" and type kernel
in the search string. It's located on one of the cd's. (I'm using Mandrake 10 comm. though........) That helped me when I was in trouble..... Type uname -r in konsole abd you see the name of the kernel, the kernal interface must match the name you get when typing uname -r in konsole.

That means X is still running !??!
You should exit the X-Server. Type "init 3" (without quotes) in a terminal as root.

All right, so if I were you, I would reboot into fail safe mode, then run the install file as root ( "su") in "init 3" mode then reboot again in normal mode and edit your XF86Config file (/etc/X11/) Then once again reboot. Unless, if you prefer, just edit the config file first, then do the reboot in fail safe, etc... I think that will work as well.
