Video Processing Engine

click on image for full view

According to nVidia, the 6800's Video Processing Engine (VPE) is a quad-issue (address/scalar/vector/branch) processor with a 16-way SIMD vector unit, which supports both dynamic branching and integer processing. It's a dedicated unit, too, so doesn't simply repurpose the ALUs used by the pixel and vertex shader engines.

Here's the highlight reel of the VPE's supported feature set:

# Integrated TV-encoder
# HDTV Transport stream handling
# HDTV Output (720p, 1080i, 480p, CGMS)
# MPEG 2 Decode / Encode – SD & HD resolutions
# MPEG 4 Decode / Encode
# WMV9 Decode, including HD resolutions. (WMV encode may be added later)
# DiVX Decode / Encode
# Inverse Telecine (3:2 pulldown)
# Motion Adaptive De-interlacing
# High Quality Scaling
# Video de-blocking

i mean mpeg4 encoding whoooo!!!. We all now that new generation cards brings more speed blah blah but this is all boring since apart AF or FSAA none have offer other things to play with..

If R420 offers similar performance, or even faster performance, would you buy the NV40 over the R420 for the PS3.0 and FP32 precision? What I'm thinking is, Nvidia here has provided a card that can run FP32 blazingly fast and supports PS3.0. That being the case, would you take a precision and shader model hit on the ATI card for a bit faster speed, if that were the case? Answering this question might make waiting for R420 irrelevant.

If it was close I would go with Nv40, I'd love to switch to another brand just for change, but I doubt it will be close unless Ati tries to tweak design just enough to be on par.

The 6800u has definetely impressed me. Far beyond what the FX series ever did. Not to mention those PS3.0 shots look excellent.

Though I am leaning toward the 6800u I will wait and see what ATi can offer before making a final decision. The PS3.0 is a tempting feature after seeing it in game.

I'll be the smart buyer though and wait for the X800 to see how things are going to end up.

For me, it depends on when they are available. If the 6800U makes it out first I'm sure I'll buy it. If it looks like they'll both be available at roughly the same time then I'll probably see how the R420 looks before deciding which one to purchase first. Most likely I'll end up with one of each though since I need a card for each system (unless one card dominates in all areas then I might end up with two from the same company).

It's Vertex shaders at abit on the slow side mind. But it's pixle power has been greatly improved

Refer to this post about Far Cry and Shader 3.0:

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=27318

It's "not exposed/working" just yet

It's better to wait what ATI has in store.. that's all I've got to say about this..

Anandtech is MUCH worse than HardOCP.. I have respect for Brent's reviews and some relevent info.. instead of Anand's "lack of research"...

PS 3.0 is still currently a "marketable feature"... til native PS 3.0 games use it (PS 3.0 will most likely use to accelerate PS 2.0 games at this time)

Quote:
FarCry isn't working right on the 6800 Ultra currently, when the drivers/game is fixed it should run in PS3.0 not 1.1/2.0 as it is now.
It's the drivers, not the application.

Quote:
TOms REview and those charts of splinter cell above shows clearly How FAr from reality was the HArdOCP review... using 1024x768 resolution (cpulimited most of the time) and higher AA/AF in the NV40.. but later comparing the IQ at same AA/AF levels (non playable in ATI cards) with the NV40 .
Tom's preview also has the "precision bug" but.. HardOCP doesn't... it makes me think Tom's did his wrong.

Is the 6800 ultra retail card going to take up one or two pci slots?
