What? They changed engines AGAIN in 2002? I thought they had been using the Unreal engine since late 1999. Surely when they went over to the Unreal Warfare engine they didn't scrap EVERYTHING, did they? Huh, maybe we'll see the final game a few years after they move over to the Unreal 3 engine

That is their problem!

They are pissing up a rope right now. The thing about a game is it can only get 'so good'.

So lets make up a hypotehtical sitaution.

Lets say, that it takes Valve One month, to make HL2 20% better!

But the down side is, that every month, the games delay and content will age and devalue at 30% each month.

So the longer they delay, they can make the game better for a bit, but soon, it will have a 'its been done many times before' feeling.

From George Broussard's post in this thread from 01/24/04 - http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthread...fpart=all&vc=1

Quote:
In a nutshell the delays came from us never being at a point where we could really make the game. We didn't have the technology together in sufficient form to progress, and we re-started some core things a few times. In early 2002, we basically started over, hired some new people and are well underway - now - and things are great.

Hi Gabe

Things happening around now (magazine previews and build up to E3) with a lot of good messages and quotes coming out of you guys that your gonna make a summer release.

I understand you can’t say anything right now about the release date, but you could clear up a recent piece of news that’s kinda stirring things up, some site called VG Pro have taken it upon themselves to take an answer you gave to an interview in Polygon magazine, suggesting (In VG Pro's Mind) the game had a chance of being delayed into 2005.

It's a tense time in the community right now, everyone’s dying to start playing this game, and any light you could shed on any of these things would be great.

Thanks
Lets all end the rumors please

Hi Gabe,

I don't suppose one of you guys would drop by our news forum and make a
brief post to say that Half-Life 2 isn't actually delayed? It doesn't
seem to matter what we post, they're still running round like headless
chickens.

Well, technically they haven't set a release date for it this year, so of course it can't be delayed

But the same would've applied to Half-life 1, wouldn't it? Half-life 1 was delayed for over a year from it's original date, and look at how it was recieved. Perhaps the technology might've been more impressive in 1997 (even though it was still based on the Quake engine), and perhaps a few things would've suprised us more, but it sounds like that extra year transformed the game from a second-rate shooter to the highest-rated PC game of all time. Perhaps HL2 would be better recieved if it was released this month, but what if another 6 months or even 12 months of development time could make the game twice as good (and often, many games are released in a state that's almost enjoyable, but a few major issues ruin them that could've easilly been fixed in a longer beta/QA period). Similarly, ALL Blizzard games are MASSIVELY delayed, but when they're released they end up getting some of the highest ratings out there and the largest player bases in the history of video games. If they released horribly buggy, unbalanced games, do you think they'd have as many fans?

Even if the game is technologically outdated by the time it's released, the gameplay is still the core of what makes it fun, and if their mod support is good enough then it could succeed even if it has outdated graphics. Hmm, that reminds me, I need to get some more practice on XSI EXP for HL2...

Now, if Gabe can pull this off better then the CZ incident, I'll be suprised.

Delaying a game isn't always a bad thing. Look at Duke Nukem 3D. It was vastly outdated tech-wise against Quake, but debate still rages over which one was more fun to play.
The thing is that now, in the current gaming community, we've done so much more than when Duke3D, or Half Life came out. We've seen scripped games (Half Life, Medal of Honor, Call of Duty), more open ended games (Deus Ex, Far Cry), tactical games (Rainbow 6), twich shooters (Quake 3), excellent multiplayer games (UT2004, Battlefield 1942), and fancy graphic games (Far Cry, UT2004); and that's just naming a few. Releasing a game now that surprises us, and is more fun than every other in that category is getting harder every time a new game comes out.
If anyone can release a game that's fun and original it doesn't matter how old or dated the graphics/engine gets, it'll be fun to play. But if you release a game that's been there, done that; you're gonna have some upset people, and some empty pockets when it's all over.

Learned about this on [H]. Seems the head of PlanetHalfLife has said the hell with the site.
