Default Support for FD.O X server?

Will there be any support for the freedesktop.org X server ( http://freedesktop.org/Software/xserver )?

I haven't used that X server yet, but I would like to since it's likely to become ubiquitous among all the Linux distributions.

No

likely to become ubiquitous among all the Linux distributions is xorg X11R6.7.
Both are hosted by freedesktop. But they are completly different projects.

I have faith in the freedesktop.org X server. However, it will not be ready and stable for public use for some time.

I think that if nvidia are going to start supporting a non xfree86 server it will be xorg X11R6.x (which at this point is so similar to Xfree86 that the current xf86 drivers can be used).

Hello,

but maybe in future Andy M. has the time and the fun to write an own server.

This will be like in the past for the old XFree86 3.3.x where he ? wrote an svga server for the Riva128 cards and can play q2. :-)

Regards,
Marcus

What? X11R6.7 is a protocol spec of the next generation X protocol, not an implementation of an X server.

It would be a shame if NVidia doesn't have any support for Keith Packard's X server implementation. It has a lot of nice features that the XFree86/XOrg versions do not, but it would be difficult to use an X server without any OpenGL acceleration.

Look at BeOS with its nice and fast GUI. Its death. I also like the way and the X Server from K.P., but its like in the car industry an prototype and a long way from an really stable release. Wait 1-2 years for it. I really hope it goes faster and will be our next X one, but it also has some not so good things like the servers from XF3.3, for every card an own server...

Look also at http://www.fresco.org/ earlier Berlin named. It has many good features, too. But, in developement since years. Its difficult to wrote an new X system from the outset

@rhorn

No, X11R6 is the protocoll spec, xorg X11R6.7 is an implementation of this spec, governed by the X consortium/ The Open Group, and hosted at fd.o.
See:
http://www.x.org
http://xorg.freedesktop.org

And Keith's xserver (formerly kdrive) will most likely have a DDX wrapper, as will Y-Windows. So those servers will be able to load and use current binary drivers by Nvidia, ATI, XGI, 3DLabs etc.

It isn't "formerly" kdrive, it *is* kdrive. The FreeDesktop.org site is just very poorly written as it doesn't make that clear, which leads to all sorts of confusion. The Xserver project includes no only kdrive, but several other X servers as well. kdrive is just the most popular of those, now that Xorg moved to its own module.

kdrive will *not* have an XFree86/Xorg DDX wrapper, as it isn't technically feasible. They are two very alien architectures.

kdrive is nowhere near user ready, not for at least another year (and likely a lot longer), as it isn't intended for users. It's an experimental play ground. The features being worked on are working their way into Xorg (there is already a branch that includes XFIXES and DAMAGE extensions for Xorg, and COMPOSITE is likely on the way when those are stable).

There really isn't any reason for anyone who doesn't plan on developing new X technologies to even look at kdrive. It's not for users at all. Almost all configuration occurs in the source code itself, there is little to no documentation, and not much stability or mainstream hardware support. Maybe some day when it's more "feature complete" some efforts will be put forth to making it production ready, but don't hold your breath. It's likely to remain the play ground and Xorg will be the production X server.

Well, all right.
X is currently in a state of flux, it's hard to tell what we'll see in the future. I think I remember a discussion on the mailing list about a DDX wrapper, but well, maybe some of the members don't know what xserver will become, too - or it was meant in a different context. It is a testing ground right now, that's for sure (part of the "Modular Development Efforts" according to the xorg site). And Keith is also release manager for xorg X11 AFAIK...
