Default Powermizer for Linux??

Hello, I am looking for some kind of 'Powermizer' tool for linux with no success ,I've already seen this post, but it doesn't say much. I have a GeForce 4200 Go and would like to run it cooler under Linux.

Any info on this from one of the "nvidia guys" ?

Regards,

- german

The videocard can be made a little cooler using nvclock (underclocking) but the rest is the task of other utilities. You need to look for ACPI support. The main thing that helps is "downclocking" the CPU and stuff like that some ACPI tools can do. (note not all cpus contain good power saving capabilities)

I'm not asking about keeping my notebook cool, I'm already using cpufreq to scale cpu frequency dinamically (with cpudynd) and gkrellm-i8k to control my fans, and laptop-mode patch (also with cpudynd) to keep my hard disk idle as much time as possible. ACPI is also working quite fine, the only thing that does not work at all with Power Management is the nvidia driver.

I just want some kind of API or tool to set the power consumption of the mobile nvidia cards, something like Powermizer for windows.

I was looking for something like that for ages, but on my GeForce FX Go5200, Powermizer in windoz didn't seem to extend my battery life much when I was playing my games. But then again, if I'm not playing games, I can generally squeeze around 6 or 7 hours out of my lil Dell i8600, which ain't bad.

Don't know what it'll be like for you, but for me it isn't really worth bothering with one.

I have a toshiba 1410-401 with a gforce 4 go 420
normally I have about 3 hours accu time in windows
including all acpi settings you know.
in linux i have 2 hours.
the only thing i can't set in linux yet is the power consumtion of the nvidia chip.
so, it's eating up this 1 hour.
1/3 of my battery

It's not nice if you know the power consumtion CAN be controlled

it's even worse if I don't use nvidia drivers. all graphical calculations go to the cpu what is eating up much more power

Hmm... guess I'm just lucky. In windoz I get around 3 hours compared to my 6 or 7 in linux. I got the most powersavings from setting my cpufreqd rules so not much makes the cpu speed up (I never really do much thats cpu intensive) and my sleeping the HD. Another thing I did which helped was I took the monitor brightness all the way down. Ach well, good luck in your powermizer quest anyway.
