Question Power needs for NVIDIA TI4600 vs ATI 9800PRO

How much power does the NVIDIA TI4600 needs and how much does the ATI 9800PRO needs?
About the same?

The ti4600 doesn't need its own molex connection and the 9800 Pro does. That tells me that you're going to need a bit more power for the 9800 Pro. However, if you have a good brand-name PSU at 300W or greater, you'll be fine.

Your probly ok, Dell uses the 9800Pro's in their desktops with a Dell 250W powersupply.

Thumbs up Re: Power needs for NVIDIA TI4600 vs ATI 9800PRO

Those ratings do look marginal. But generally there is no harm in trying. If the PS is not up to the task, the computer may not even boot properly, or 3D games especially will crash. Give it a shot.

The 9800 should be fine with that power supply. However, if you were considering a newer card (GeForce 6800) you would definitely need to upgrade because the +12 rating on your PSU is weak. You also would have to check to see if your Dell has a standard ATX power supply if you were going to upgrade as they're known for using proprietary components.

I think most power supplies have a trip function that will cause them to auto-shut down when they get overloaded. Luckily it seems as if frying your components by overloading the PS isn't a real danger. At least, my Antec has a shutoff function anyway so I bet most others do.
