Unhappy Widescreen woes

I recently customized and purchased a HP Pavillion zd7000 with the 17" WXGA screen, 128MB GeForce FX Go5700 video, etc and installed Mandrake 10 Community

Here is my problem:

The WXGA native resolution is 1440 x 900. This res works flawlessly in Windows XP. I have edited the XF86Config-4, read all the man and info pages have to say, checked online, and haven't had much luck. I wasted the better part of a day playing with this. I add 1440x900 in the ModeLines and under the Display areas, kill the x server and restart it only to find:

A) That my desktop has increased to 1440x900 whereas my
resolution has not resulting in overflow off of the screen

B) The resolution "sets itsself" to 1024x768.

Is the actual resolution set somewhere other than the XF86? or is it some secret hidden meaning in the modeline in my XF86Config-4? Sorry I didn't post the file, my sister borrowed it for the weekend (Frozen Bubble addict) 1024x768 is ok on my monitor but it is not the native resolution when means that the picture is slightly interpolated. Any help would be appreciated.

Default Re: Widescreen woes

By default X contains some builtin resolutions (modelines). On Windows those resolutions are useally autodetected from info from the monitor or are given by a monitor .inf file. To get custom resolutions on X you need a modeline describing the resolution. There are some tools to calculate them.
