Unhappy startx error after installing nvidia driver, but no error in log

Hardware:
AMD 64 3000+
Abit KV8 Max3 motherboard
512 mb memory
PNY GeForce FX 5200
Single generic 1280x1024 CRT (TRL model 510, but not listed/probed by Linux during install)

OS:
Fedora Core 1 X86_64
OS Kernel: Linux version 2.4.22-1.2188.nptl
XFree86 Version 4.3.0 (Fedora Core 1: 4.3.0-55)

I intalled Fedora Core 1 for x86_64 last week, and have tried installing the nvidia drivers from NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-5332-pkg0.run. I read the instruction front to back before attempting to install (and 3 more times since), but can't seem to figure out where things have gone wrong. I'm still new to Linux. But would rate myself just slightly better than a total newbie. To ouline the steps I took,

1. editted inittab to runlevel 1 (big whoops)
2. rebooted logged in as root
3. after warning from nvidia-installer, I exited and editted inittab to runlevel 3
4. rebooted, logged in as root
5. sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5332-pkg0.run
6. yes to license, yes to all
-no prebuilt kernel interface, none on the FTP sight.
-run script built the interface, reported no errors.
-claimed install sucessful.
7. editted /etc/X11/XF86Config <-- verified this is the Config file used by X server
-broke out my old Unix books to remind myself how to use vi to edit and save
-removed lines --> Load "dri", Load "GLcore"
-verified line --> Load "glx"
-edited Driver "nv" to read Driver "nvidia"
-saved and exited
8. startx <------ total freeze with bunch of ascii garbage.
9. hard reset.
10. read /var/log/XFree86.0.log <-- at this point, there were errors at the end of log
-unfortunaetly didn't save a copy of these log attempts
11. several attempts to startx -- -verbose 5 -logverbose 5
-found verbose 5 did absolutely nothing as no display to screen prior to ASCII garbage
-read /var/log/XFree86.0.log <-- slightly different error each time, none saved
12. after multiple reboots, edited XF86Config --> Driver "nv"
13. rebooted to gnome desktop to
-reread nvidia readme and print out the entire file, since hand written notes not thorough enough
-printed XF86Config and XFree86.0.log <-- currently succesful copied
-printed nvidia's XF86Config.example <-- to compare
14. rebooted, after re-editing XF86Config --> Driver "nvidia"
15. lsmod shows nvidia not loaded, cd'd to location of nvidia.0 and ran
- insmod ./nvidia.o
16. noted warning about GPL but loading reported no error
17. lsmod to verify nvidia loaded
18. startx -- -logverbose 5 <----- another hang with ASCII garbage.
19. rebooted, saved XF86Config and XFree86.0.log
20. edited XF86Config --> Driver "nv", and here I am.....

I've exhausted my understanding of Linux, X, and the accompanying nvidia README. I've read some of the forum threads and have seen that many people with similar hardware, (and even FC1) have had similar problems (even wondered at the guy who re-installed the OS rather than just re-editing the XF86Config file, but hey, I did NOT laugh. this is my 2nd install for similar reasons. To a newbie it's easier to reinstall after breaking something so soon, and then go learn how to avoid doing it wrong again). Unfortunately, I haven't seen any answer, at least not one I understood. Can anyone help me get this driver working? I'll attach 5 files.

1. XF86Config.intended.txt<-- as it is meant to be with the nvidia driver loaded.
2. XFlog-nvidia.txt <-- XFree86.0.log with nvidia driver loading
3. lsmod-before.txt <--- before and after insmod ./nvidia.o from the command line
4. lsmod-after.txt
5. insmod-err.txt <-- output of insmod --probe ./nvidia.o

in addition to getting the driver to work - assuming I can, I'd like to get the nvidia kernel inerface loading automatically. While I'm sure I can track down how to do that in another 4hours - or so, could someone kindly tell me, since the subjects are related?
