Alright, here's the scoop.
Slackware 9.1. Kernel upgraded to 2.6.5-mm6. X upgraded to 4.4.0. The machine is an HP Pavillion a320n, which seems to have an nforce2 based mainboard. Installing the driver with the .run file works fine. A module gets compiled, installed, and I can 'modprobe' it just fine. There are no unresolved externals; it shows up in my 'lsmod' data. I edit my XF86Config file to change Driver "nv" to Driver "nvidia". I've toyed with different AGP settings, IgnoreDevices settings, etc. But every time I start X with "nvidia" ("nv" works FINE!), the screen goes black and I get a complete and total lockup. No keyboard, no network, zippo. Earlier postings said that X comes up after a few minutes, but not in my case. The only thing I can do is a hard reset. The /proc/drivers/nvidia/cards/0 contains: Model: GeForce4 MX Integrated GPU IRQ: 11 Video BIOS: ??.??.??.??.?? ![]() Card Type: AGP Interesting on the video BIOS, huh?? When I boot down into XP, I can get device properties and it says v.4.1f.00.07.10 I can't get an X log, since the machine crashes and the file doesn't get written (or committed out of the reiser journal...) Attached is my kernel config file, in case anything in there looks suspicious, as well as some startup log info. Thanks for any help, folks! Ken |

You have 4K stacks enabled. Maybe you can turn it off (kernel configuration), otherwise you will have to revert the 4k-stack patch. In both cases you will have to recompile the kernel, reboot and try again.

As documented in the README, the VBIOS can only be read while the X server is running.

Hey, thanks for pointing out the 4k/8k issue... It's now working like a charm!
Other than switching 'nv' to 'nvidia', I'm not having to tinker with any other settings ![]() |
