Question Black screen after Fedora Core 2 Test 3

Kind helpers,

I just upgraded to Fedora Core 2, Test 3 and then tried the nVidia
installer using the --add-this-kernel, followed by *custom.run.
Everything seemed to run to completion without error.
But when I booted up to run level 5 (graphic mode), as soon
as the optical mouse light lit, normally the time when I get the
nVidia splash screen alerting the successful starting of X and the gdm,
all I get is a black screen. The computer is hung at this point.
Ctl-Alt-Backspace will not yield a text login prompt. Only a
hardware reset will unfreeze the CPU.

Looking in my /var/log/Xorg0.log tells me that:
Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module.

Any Fedora users having made it successfully to Test 3, just released,
please advise what I may have overlooked.

All help appreciated.

Doug

nvidia driver is not working with Fedora 2.6 Kernel, you have to recompile and remove de 4K_Stacks option..
Here is a discussion about it...

Having read the above thread to the best of my ability
I conclude that it is presently impossible to continue trying to use
Fedora >as it is released< with my nVidia graphics board.

Why won't, or better yet, when will the folks at nVidia step in and
provide a corrected driver which will keep up with the kernel
developments?

Again, as I read it, it is not an issue of any one specific vendor's
distribution (i.e. Fedora vs. Mandrake vs. Suse, etc.) but rather
the Linux kernel development which is seeking to optomize the
use of stacks to improve threading capability. It seems to me
that this is something inevitable which nVidia will be forced to
deal with if it wishes to continue to support Linux at all.
It cannot resonably expect the Linux community to freeze its
Linux kernel revision just to maintain hardware compatibility with
its graphic cards. That just is not an option. Linux will move on,
and so must driver development move on and keep pace.

So if there are nVidia company reps monitoring these posts,
please give us the next revision of the driver which will accomodate
the later Linux kernels with all possible dispatch.

nvidia does not support testing/beta operating systems. Also this is a kernel feature that is not enabled by default in other distros. Once Fedora Core 2 Final is released im sure that nvidia will have a driver release follow shortly there after. While it is not convienant for testers this is a test release for a reason. The Fedora Devel team says that things will be broken and this is not for normal use. In this case the nvidia driver is broken on their custom kernel. I recomend you download the latest source from www.kernel.org and just make a new kernel and you will have a nice running system.

You are forgetting that 4KSTACKS will cease to be an option as of the soon-to-be-released version of Linus' kernel, being enabled by default. The current 2.6.x kernel is the last one where the present nvidia driver will ever work.

Angry Re: Black screen after Fedora Core 2 Test 3

I will say this hoping that someone at nvidia sees the light: nvidia should make a statement about whether we will have a new driver soon, this would ease the minds of many people. They don't have to give a date, just reassure people that the driver is going forward with this. The powers-that-be at nvidia don't seem to realize the damage that keeping their customers (or more importantly, potential customers that can be thrown at ATI because of an uncertainty feeling) in the dark does to them!

about 2 weeks ago i read a posting where someone was talking about how they saw a presentation about the 6x.xx series of drivers coming out for linux. This post also said that around the end of may they might be released. This sounds about right as nvidia is going to have the Geforce 6800's out for the masses around then too. So i would guess another month.
