Question X.org X11 and NVIDIA OpenGL problem

Hello there!

I'm running Fedora Core 1 on an athlon machine with a GeForce 2 GTS card.
I recently upgraded my X11 installation to the latest X11R6.7 from X.org
(using the rpm's supplied by FC2 test3) and also updated glibc alongside
to 3.3.2 which was a prerequisite.
Everything works fine as of now as long as I use the supplied nv driver
from X.org, downside here of course is the slow OpenGL performance
(glxgears runs with less than 300fps).

I ran the 5336 nvidia driver package and got the driver installed successfully,
but with the problem that libGLcore couldn't be loaded...

Code:
(II) LoadModule: "GLcore"
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module GLcore
(II) UnloadModule: "GLcore"
(EE) Failed to load module "GLcore" (module does not exist, 0)
(II) LoadModule: "glx"
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so
dlopen: /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so: symbol _nv000344gl
, version LIBGLCORE not defined in file libGLcore.so.1 with link time r
eference
(EE) Failed to load /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so
(II) UnloadModule: "glx"
(EE) Failed to load module "glx" (loader failed, 7)

Well, no problem, I thought, this should be easy... FAMOUS LAST WORDS!
Lets put a symlink from the installed /usr/lib/libGLcore.so.1.0.5336 to
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extentions and name it libGLcore.so... that gave me
the following output in Xorg.0.log:

Code:
(II) LoadModule: "GLcore"
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libGLcore.so
dlopen: /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libGLcore.so: undefined symbo
l: _nv000022gl
(EE) Failed to load /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libGLcore.so
(II) UnloadModule: "GLcore"
(EE) Failed to load module "GLcore" (loader failed, 7)
Anybody experienced similar problems? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Tommy.

Btw: Am I completly blind or has this forum no search?

Have you read the README that comes with the driver?

I believe the answer to your problem lies on Page 5:
"Remove 'Load GLCore' from your XF86Config"

Try that and see what happens. (and remove the symlink)

Did that, but the glx error is still there:

Code:
(II) LoadModule: "glx"
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so
dlopen: /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so: symbol _nv000344gl
, version LIBGLCORE not defined in file libGLcore.so.1 with link time r
eference
(EE) Failed to load /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so
(II) UnloadModule: "glx"
(EE) Failed to load module "glx" (loader failed, 7)
I put a symlink from the normal GLcore and the tls GLcore into
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions, both didn't work out. I removed
all symlinks and the error is still there.

I forgot to mention that I use a self-compiled Kernel 2.6.5, if this
matters... I read about the CONFIG_4K.. something thing, checked my
.config and didn't saw any configuration like this in there, so I assume
I don't have this problem (hopefully).

Thanks for your time =)

Btw... I don't need to use the latest driver, if you can tell me another one which is
capable of running OpenGL apps accelerated with my sysconfig (Fedora Core 1,
X11 from X.org, Kernel 2.6.5).

Thanks again!
Tommy.

Hi,
do you have the files in the 'tls' dir, /usr/lib/tls?

Yep, I do, tried to symlink the libs from /usr/lib/tls to /usr/lib, but that way kdeinit stopped working....

Hi,

Check the libglx.so file in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions. It should be a symbolic link to the NVidia supplied libglx.so.1.0.xxxx shared object (where xxxx = driver version). By the looks of the error message you still have a X.org supplied version of the library installed in that directory.

Listing of my /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions dir:

My OpenGL is not working at all, not even slow. Anyone has a solution?

Thanks

Post your X log and XF86Config, please. Also, post the output of the following command

# ldd `which glxgears`

You should get a list of libraries, one of those lines should be

libGL.so.1 => /usr/lib/tls/libGL.so.1 (0x00141000)

If it's not, your apps do not use Nvidia's libraries, but the old ones.

Issues with the libraries are much easier to deal with if you install the driver from RPM packages supplied by livna.org (link in my sig). The libraries are relocated so that they will be loaded separately, before the old libraries, and not replace / destroy the libraries installed by Mesa-libGL.

I put a symlink from /usr/lib/tls/libGL.so.1.5336 to /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 so glxgears would use that instead, but that broke my KDE installation... I'll now try the suggested rpms...

Thanks so far.
