well, i use linux -- so my choice of browsers is somewhat different than that of windows...

also i use kde, which makes my preference a bit weird.

i HATE gnome, but i must say, there is one program for gnome that i love; that's galeon. galeon is very light-weight, loads in less than a second easily. it is also very unsuseptable to exploitation because it's a rarely used browser. it uses the gecco rendering engine, so its compatability with websites is exactly that of mozilla/firebird/firefox.

the only thing that drives me insane about galeon is the fact that it sometimes uses the, as i call it, "gnome way of thinking". these people are a different breed, i swear. you would think you can right click on a picture and go to properties, not at all, lol. you also can not right click on anything (like the titlebar, and the spinner). you can't click and drag toolbars to move them to different position either. i guess that's all ok though, because you *can* do all of that, you just have to figure out how to do it in the messed up way of thinking that gnome users have. also, my biggest pet-peeve of all is the gecco rendering engine's way of deciding where you want the scroll wheel to go. if you put your mouse over a window, it will not scroll in that window uless you change the focus to that window. it drives me nuts, because when posting on forums especially you may need to scroll between 2 different windows, and just pointing your mouse where you want to scroll is *very* nice.

heh, nice to know.

well, linux is actually completely free for the most part. some distros charge, but not many.

if what you're looking for is both learning and building linux from the ground up, then gentoo is the thing for you. if you're a 56ker then gentoo is a good idea as well; you can choose what you would like to install etc. i must say the installation process is a bit confusing, but you will probably get it figured out. any questions you have you can post in the linux forums here.

for gentoo, go to www.gentoo.org -- click on the link to "gentoo hand book" on the left, this should get you started and tell you everything you need to know essentually.

before you start, however, post your configuration and what you want to do etc on the linux forums (for example, if you would like to dual boot between windows/linux, or if you would like to be total linux, etc.).

good luck, any questions feel free to ask me or anyone else in the linux forums

edit: gentoo is known as being the linux distro for the power user, and has gotten a reputation of being an operating system that can be very difficult for beginners to linux to understand, so you may want to explore the opportunity of other distributions; however, i feel that gentoo is completely newb friendly just so long as you have support along the way. don't be shy for questions and gentoo should do you justice, but definitely keep that in mind when deciding on which distribution you'd like to use. (please post in the linux forums so that people can explain the pro's and cons of different distros, so that you can figure out which one is best for you )

Default Re: IE/Mozilla/Opera/Whatever Other Web Browsers

I only use IE when firefox cant handle my downloads properly. Sometimes it will only give me the option to open files and not save them. Also sometimes spacing displays incorrectly, but only randomly. A good example is Gamespot.com where the page has move half way to the right and there is no option to scroll.

But otherwise it's fast, simple and neat.

I use Opera but my only complaints are the stupid bookmark sort problem that they never seem to have fixed and the occasional crash. It still isn't entirely stable for me, goes down at least once a week.

I usually use Opera, but when that doesnt work, I use MyIE2 (a browser running on the IE engine but many more features, including tabbed browsing).
As for linux, opera or mozilla usually.
