i said i agree, meaning its my opinion that nv40 will turn out to be slow when running shader model 3.

Based on what, your thoroughly unscientific analysis here?

SM 3.0 is supposed to help improve performance in certain areas vs SM 2.0. Crytek said as much, that their SM 3.0 add-on will be primilarly to improve performance over SM 2.0. Image quality in FarCry between PS 2.0 and PS 3.0 will be very similar.

I suggest waiting for DirectX 9.0c to come out, waiting for the FarCry SM 3.0 add on to come out, and waiting for some non-buggy Forceware drivers before jumping to conclusions about the NV40's performance in FarCry.

but getting back to that 'last statement'.. i'm not sure how legitimate it is at this point.. 1600 4xaa/8xaf the pe was about 30% faster than the ultra (49fps vs 39.4 fps)..

keep in mind tho that this is on pre-release hardware and beta drivers, with serious bugs like not being able to run with hyperthreading enabled - with no sm3 support. it may or may not be reflect the situation in a month or so when the cards are actually available.

obvious the r420 is a great card; mine will be here monday

i'm just saying it might be a bit early to write nvidia off just yet, that's all.

You could say the Nv40 loses in Far Cry to the R420 with beta drivers, running in Nv3x codepath, and no SM3 implementations.

Since shader model 3 donĀ“t mean better IQ without increasing the shader instructions, forcing you to run 32-bit of course if you want more eyecandy you will have to pay the price for it as always

I just hope they deliver a X800 patch too giving this so we really can see what benefits especially PS 3.0 has over PS 2.0 since that is pure "performance fixes so to speak". Should be able to show nicely in benchmarks. Should be interesting to see how much closer nVidia can get.

Ran much slower than what? Like you are in a position to say, not even having any first hand experience with how the SM 3.0 add-on compares to the SM 2.0 version.

Crytek themselves state that the add-on uses SM 3.0 technology to primarily improve performance vs SM 2.0. Logically, there would be no good reason to include an add-on if it was not worthwhile to do so.

so then jakup is lying and the game didnt lag with only 4x aa and level 1 af at 1280 res. it averages 58 fps in the benches of the same res at 4x aa and 8x af in the plain vanilla game.

No one can really prove jakup right or wrong, because no one else seems to have first hand experience, and no one seems to have hard data to back it up. That is why I suggested waiting for DirectX 9.0c, waiting for the SM 3.0 add-on to come out, and waiting for some less buggy Forceware drivers before jumping to conclusions regarding FarCry.

jimmyjames let it go already. Your whole world won't colapse if the 6800 does not perform as well as you like, or if ATi happens to be better at PS games like Far Cry. IT COULD HAPPEN you know. ATi could be the card for Far Cry. Or nVidia may indeed prove their medal. As it stands now, the performance of the 6800U in Far Cry is cause for concern.
