Default udev support?

Right, now udev is pretty mature and is well adapted into 2.6.x. It's become popular on a few distributions over devfs. Right now, inorder to get the devices working you need to manually mknod the nvidia0-9 on startup. Is there ever going to be a fix for that in the installer? Someone wrote a patch for the installer but it appears to broken now with 2.6.6.

Thanks,
Jason

Gentoo has a patch for this, which I assume works with 2.6.6; note that it isn't the installer that needs to be patched, but the NVIDIA kernel module source.

As udev has yet to make it’s way into the vanilla kernel tree (2.6.1..6) I doubt that it’ll be supported any time soon.
There are bigger problems to solve. (4K stacks, 6800 support, vesafb consoles, etc)

Red face Re: udev support?

udev is not in the kernel, it is just a user-space tool.
It is a daemon that uses the hotplug interface to create and
delete /dev entries, if i am not wrong. So the only thing that the nvidia
module should do is register/unregister the devices correctly for
hotplug to work.

I bump:
Come on, NVidia, PLEASE release new drivers with 4kstack and 32bits
on AMD64 support! i buyed nvidia **only** because of the good (?) linux
support, please don't disappoint me!!!!

This I know... but I seem to remember that a certain patch is required for devfs that has yet to enter the main tree... am I wrong?

It's not really a patch, more like a temporary fix. Also, udev is being included more and more in new distributions. I know slackware has it, because I run it. I also know gentoo is slowly merging it, meaning a really big demand in supporting this.

Thanks

Don't crap on my thread. I just want people to realize the importance of nvidia patching their drivers for udev.

Thanks
