Exclamation Support for 4K stack in the next kernel?

From what I understand that the stack in the linux kernel will be going from 8K to 4K in the next iteration of the kernel 2.6.6. It is to show up in the next -mc/bk release of the kernel this next week.

http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kern...3/announce.txt

My question is will nvidia release an new version supporting this and if so when?

If there is new quick resultution to this I along with alot other will not be able to upgrade to the next kernel

No, it will not be. Notice that the 4k-stacks-always-on patch isn't in there. It will be an "Experimental" option in Kernel Hacking submenu.

floam's on the ball. As of -mc2, it's a config option that defaults to no. You must explicitly enable it if you wish 4K stacks.

Below is a snippit from kernel.org's changelong for the latest 2.6.5-? submitted changes....

ChangeSet@1.1713.18.181, 2004-04-12 13:18:43-07:00, ....@osdl.org
[PATCH] ia32: 4Kb stacks (and irqstacks) patch

....

At present 4k stacks are selectable in config. When the feature has settled
in we should remove the 8k option. This will break the nvidia modules. But
Fedora uses 4k stacks so a new nvidia driver is expected soon.

WOO WOO, thanks NVIDIA... glad to see things are happening (even if hidden from public view)!

One thing that I would like to know, is how to remove the 4K option in the Fedora Core 2 test 3 release. That would allow me to use the NVIDIA drivers would it not?

If anyone has any information reguarding this, please post a reply

Thanks,
Draek

You need to revert linux-2.6.5-nostack.patch and rebuild the kernel; this thread has more information on how to do this:

That's a quote from the -mm2 Changelog, no?

It will be in the kernel but as a option in the xconfig, you dont need to worry about it.

you are wrong!
it will _not_ be in any config. that quote was form 2.6.6-rc3-mm2. and if you take a look in the kernel mailing-list, you can find this post:

We need to push this issue along quickly. The single-page stack generally
gives us a better kernel and having the stack size configurable creates
pain.
another interesting posting

Wrong place to ask Go, ask NVidia for a solution. Their driver would
long be working with 4K stacks if they had open-sourced it...

I hear it was going to be a option in the kernel config so you could enable it or not, a definitive answer?

It's not a case of nvidia open sourcing there driver, because it is not going to happen, so just face it and shut up.

it was, but it will not be in future!
and if you don't believe it, ask yourself at the mailing-list or andrew morton personal.
